Are you looking to buy upper body protection but don't know what to choose? Between the
stone guard
and
protective vest
, you are hesitating… But don’t worry! We are here to help you make your choice based on several criteria!
The stone guard is a protection made up of two padded shells at the chest and back. It thus protects these parts of the body from mud and stone projections during races. It also protects them during falls, preventing serious injuries to the riders. Some stone guard models also have protections at the shoulder level. This equipment is worn over the jersey.
It is mandatory to wear a stone guard during motorcycle competitionscross ! Make sure you have an approved model!
Like the stone guard, the protective vest protects the rider's back and chest. But unlike the latter, the protective vest offers complete protection for the entire upper body. Indeed, in addition to the shells on the back and chest, it also has shells on the shoulders and elbows. It also has a lumbar belt that protects the lower back.
As for protection, the point goes to the protective vest. Indeed, due to its nature and design, it allows to protect more effectively the entire torso of the pilot.
The action of the stone guard is, for its part, more restricted, being limited to the back and the chest. In order to protect more parts of the body, it is necessary to add elements such as
elbow pads
to
shoulder pads
in addition. Please note that this additional equipment may not stay in place during long journeys.
A point for the stone guard! Even if brands try to improve protective vests in terms of comfort, the stone guard remains more comfortable. Indeed, stone guards are easier to put on and hinder movements much less. The protective vest, on the other hand, is much more bulky and complicated to put on (especially models with rigid shells). In addition to this, stone guards have ventilation, which makes them comfortable to wear, whatever the season.
However, it should be noted that there are currently protective vests with memory foam shells. These models, called "ergonomic", are much more comfortable and allow the rider to move more freely.
Another point for the stone guard. Indeed, this equipment is much less complex to maintain. The hulls can be cleaned with soapy water and a sponge.
As for the protective vest, some models can be machine washed. However, it is better to check it on the label before. Otherwise, the shells of some vests are removable and can therefore be washed separately. But overall, it remains more complicated to maintain than a stone guard.
In both cases, do not let your vest or your stone guard dry near a heat source such as the sun or a radiator! The heat could stiffen and damage the shells!
In general, rock guards are less expensive than body armor. However, you should consider that in addition to the rock guard, you will probably need to invest in other upper body protection. In the end, this can be as expensive as a body armor.
Ultimately, both pieces of equipment are equal. What will tip the scales when you have to make your decision is what you are looking for first. Total protection? Easy-to-maintain equipment?
Your motorcycle practicecross will also come into play. If you ride on difficult terrain or on long journeys, a protective vest will be perfect. If you ride par In hot weather or at low speeds, a rock guard will be fine.
The most important thing is that your equipment fits you and fits well so that it does not bother you. Also think about the
homologation
if you compete!
