How to choose the right lighting?

THElighting is essential for getting around on your motorcycle in complete safety. This allows you to be seen by motorists, truck drivers and motorcyclists, but in addition, it ensures that you can see the road correctly.

A visibility problem is believed to be the cause of more than 2/XNUMX of injury accidents between a car and a two-wheeler. In the majority of cases, liability is based on a lack of perception.

If the lighting systems of two-wheelers have progressed a lot in recent years, driving at night still presents dangers. Fortunately, technology makes it possible to improve night vision with new LED bulbs which offer many advantages and improve the efficiency of headlights.

what does the law say about motorcycle lighting

What the law says ?

In terms of lighting on your two-wheeler or on your quad, in order to be completely legal, just be sure not to forget the articles R 313-1, R 313-2 and R 313-3 :

A motorcycle (…) must be fitted at the front with one or two main beam headlights, (…) with one or two dipped beam headlights.

Even if it is theoretically forbidden to modify its lighting, there is a certain tolerance in the matter.

As long as you do not dazzle other users, you are unlikely to be annoyed par the police. Otherwise, the sanction is without appeal. In addition to a category 1 fine, you also risk the immobilization of the vehicle. The so-called "xenon" kits expose you to this risk in particular. We therefore strongly advise you to inquire about the normality of the lighting you decide to buy.

The lighting of your motorcycle is no longer enough for you? Especially when doing long drives at night? In this case, you should go for LED bulbs. More economical, but also more powerful, this type of bulb can provide you with the ideal lighting for your nocturnal outings. However, with the growing number of models available on the market, it is not always easy to make the right choice.

Choose the right bulb

motorcycle incandescent bulb

Incandescent bulb:

The lighting power of an incandescent lamp is mediocre compared to its power consumption.

In addition, as the tungsten particles volatilize and blacken the bulb, the life of the latter is short. This type of bulb is very sensitive to vibrations and overvoltages.

An incandescent bulb on a motorcycle should change at least every year to maintain proper lighting performance.

motorcycle halogen bulb

Halogen bulb:

The halogen lamp makes it possible to remedy the problem of the incandescent bulb. The addition of small amounts of halogen gas atoms, such as par iodine, for example, reduces the blackening of the bulb.

Despite the regeneration inside the lamp, the tungsten filament is gradually consumed and still limits the life of the lamp.

The filament halogen bulb must replace each year, especially if you use your machine daily.

motorcycle xenon bulb

Xenon bulb:

Let's quickly go over these models which require a ballast (electrical device) that is difficult to fit on a motorcycle and a specific adjustment of the motorcycle (including controlled suspensions, which remains rare on our mounts ).

Xenon bulbs remain rare in the fleet of French two-wheelers, except as additional lights (to be used as high beam, not as low beam at the risk of dazzling other users), despite © their great reliability. Xenon is preferred for automobiles.

motorcycle led bulb

LED bulb :

English acronym meaning Light Emitting Diod, the LED is an electronic device which, with the supply of an electric current, provides light. Concretely, it is a light-emitting diode.

Compared to halogen bulbs, LED light bulbs benefit from lower energy consumption, but have better light distribution and power. The latter is comparable to what a Xenon kit can provide.

Why LEDs?

The LED bulbs stand outar fast ignition and moderate power consumption.

After being content to replace the pilot lights of your headlights and your turn signals, LEDs are now arriving on the main lights: code and high beam. The LED is an illuminating diode which has the advantage of consume very little and is super reliable.

Another advantage concerns the ability of LEDs to emit clean light. We hear par here that the light provided is devoid of ultraviolet or infrared. In the same vein, when crossing, your bulb with LED technology will not dazzle other road users, unlike a filament lamp. At least, when you use your low beams rather than your high beams.

Par elsewhere, LED bulbs perfectly withstand humidity and are more resistant to shock and vibration. Finally, unlike a headlight with a halogen bulb, your cold white or warm white LED headlight will be much more precise in terms of lighting, such as a headlight or fog lamp.

You should know that you can add additional LED lights to your motorcycle. We can par example change the incandescent bulb of the sidelights or the parking light, the license plate light, the rear light and the brake light par LED bulbs.

If opting for LED bulbs is effective in improving night vision, you also need a headlight that is perfectly tuned and adjusted according to the load or the presence of a passenger. A little wipe with glass product or using a wipe is the first thing to do to improve your motorcycle's lighting on a daily basis.

apart from low consumption, the main advantage of LED light is thatit guarantees a much better visibility. This is usually due to more efficient color shades akin to daytime running lights. In addition, LED lamps generally have an optimal lifespan of the order of 3 to 5 times more than a filament bulb.

motorcycle headlight maintenance

Conclusion

The lighting (front and rear) of motorcycles and scooters allows you to see when driving at night and also (mainly) to be seen during the day. Seeing well and being seen remains an absolute priority for your safety.

The dipped beam, compulsory for all two wheels, must remain permanently on day and night, regardless of the engine capacity (decree n° 2007-271 of February 27 2007) .

Check the headlights and bulbs very often. Make adjustments if necessary. Do not neglect cleaning the optics and regularly changing bulbs (incandescent or halogen).
