Necessary material :
1) Unbolt the wheel hub nut and rim. Depending on the model, it will also be necessary to remove the brake caliper.
2) Remove the rim.
3) Unscrew the wheel nut and remove the wheel hub.
4) Unscrew and remove the axle and upper triangle.
5) Raise the upper triangle (at the level of the spindle).
6) Hold the upper triangle with a tie-down tensioner.
7) Remove the gimbal from the differential by pulling firmly. The use of a lever may be necessary between the differential and the universal joint. Be careful not to damage the differential seal.
8) After installing the universal joint on a vice, remove the bellows collars. You can use a screwdriver or wire cutters.
9) Pull out the gimbal and remove the inner clip.
11) Remove as much used grease as possible. If the grease is free of sand or dust, that's good news. Your seal may still be in good condition. On the other hand, if the grease is contaminated, it is likely that the seal is damaged. Even if the bellows is replaced, an end of life is imminent for it.
11) Remove the second clip with needle nose pliers then the ball cage.
11) Remove the worn boot.
11) Install the new gaiter.
11) Replace the ball cage and clip.
11) Add grease to the ball cage and universal joint and to the boot. Use the entire packet of grease provided.
11) Replace the inner clip.
11) Replace the bellows.
11) Using the clamp pliers, install and tighten the clamps.
11) Replace the universal joint in the differential, take care to place it horizontally. Using the mallet, tap a little to position it well.
11) Install the gimbal in the spindle.
11) Insert the axis.
11) Refit the rocket in the upper triangle, using the spanner and the ratchet.
11) Replace the wheel hub. Tighten with a torque wrench.
11) Replace the rim.
11) Rebolt the rim then the hub nut. Use the torque wrench for the wheel bolts and hub nut.
A simple inspection of the bellows can tell you if an intervention is necessary.
The presence of grease indicates that immediate repair is needed. teesraceAny wear or cracks on the bellows indicate service in the near future.
