The engine needs air to operate, the air filter as its name suggests filters the air so that no particles (dust, sand, impurities) enter your engine. In addition, the air filter retains the humidity present in the air.
The best air filter is the one that lets the air pass the fastest by stopping 100% of the particles.
The results of better filtration can be staggering:
- Increased engine power
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Lower engine temperature
To improve air filtration, simply replace the original filter par a higher quality filter. Discover on 50Factory.com, a wide range of air filters.
Paper filters : with an average duration of 10 km, they can be dry cleaned with a rag, a blower or a compressor. Blow compressed air from the inside to the outside of the air filter, i.e. the reverse path traveled par air normally aspirated par engine. Above all, do not wet or oil it. Usually installed as original equipment, inexpensive, effective, but more difficult to maintain in good condition, especially in polluted environments.
foam filters : with a duration of 30 to 50 thousand km, they can be cleaned and then oiled. Off-road, it is strongly recommended to clean it each time you go out with hot water and a degreasing product. Rinse it carefully, wring it without twisting it so as not to deform it. After air drying, spray a thin layer ofair filter oil. CAUTION: Too much oil clogs the cells and reduces the passage of air.
"Performance" air filters are designed to last a long time and to be serviced more often than a standard filter. Their design offers more airflow than the original filters. You need specific products for maintenance. This type of filter must be cleaned at each oil change.
Horn type air filters are directly positioned on the carburettor. They have the advantage of being more aesthetic than air boxes and offer a larger air intake, which helps improve the performance of your scooter or your motorbike.
The cones are less airtight, which produces an increase in fuel consumption. Moreover, water can easily infiltrate inside. Which in the worst case can cause your carburetor to flood. They are also louder.
The original filters are usually the best for your engine. Buying different filters can pose risks to the durability and proper maintenance of your engine. Manufacturers therefore prohibit dealers from using an air filter other than the original one during the warranty period.
Resin impregnated paper filters are the most common. With this type of filter, the clogging is progressive. The more the filter is loaded with impurities, the more power the air pump requires to pass the air through the filter. Engine power gradually decreases. The air heats up as the filter becomes clogged (clogged).
The air filter of a motorcycle is not always in the same place, but in general the air box is located either under the seat, or under the tank, or behind the engine and carburetor. You will therefore have to rigorously remove the saddle and the covers that prevent access to the air box. Take a clean cloth that will take the place of the old filter while you change it; clean the air box and joints before removing the cloth and putting on the new filter.
If after cleaning, the filter remains opaque, deformed or torn, then it will have to be replaced.

The better the air filter, the more efficient it will be at performing its job. Properly filtered engine air properly lubricates metal parts and other engine components. And to be purified, the tunes need to be filtered par an efficient and effective system.
There are different air filters of all shapes, the photo above illustrates the main filters present in our motorcycles. Their shape depends on the type of uses. Thus flat filters and round filters are generally reserved for road bikes. The other filters are used on dirt bikes.
Remember that the air filter is the lungs of your vehicle. If it clogs, your engine will be starved of air and will end upar choke. Filter clogging has the effect of reducing engine performance, greatly increasing fuel consumption and causing premature wear of mechanical parts.
Regular maintenance of your air filter is not to be taken lightly; especially since most of the time this maintenance is not very complicated and can be done more or less quickly. Find our tutorial on the replacement of an air filter.
