What does the FFM ?

Motorbikescross is a democratic sport accessible to all. There are many tracks spread over the French territory for a proxmaximum imitation with practitioners. Tracks with more or less elevation, mixing artificial and natural obstacles, always approved for safe practice. Then, there are three licenses to practice it according to your desires.

The training license (NET) which allows you to ride on all our national circuits outside of a sporting setting all year round. Or even a day thanks to our latest creations, the Circuit Pass or our "one event" licence. The national competition license (NCO) allows you to participate in races, score points in the context of championships and aim for a final classification.

Is it really a sport?

Motorcycle-cross is a speed race over rough terrain in dirt, mud or sand.

This sport is practiced on a motorbike cross not homologated and prepared in order to resist the various shocks and to adapt, at best, to uneven ground and difficult surfaces.

The types of obstacles are:

- Simple jumps.

- Double, triple or quadruple jumps.

- Table.

- Camel jump: jump at two levels.

- Whoops: present especially for the super cross, these are small contiguous bumps.

Contrary to what one might think, it is not enough to learn to drive a motorcycle to practice motorcyclingcross. To enjoy it, many hours of training are necessary.

The competition and the different categories

The International Motorcycling Federation is organizing a motorcycle world championship.cross. Taking place mainly in Europe, two championships are on its calendar: MX1, MX2

The MX1 and MX2 events take place on the same weekend and on the same circuit in the form of two races, the drivers take place on the starting grid in the place they obtain according to the qualifications . The driver with the best qualifying time chooses his place first (each race being counted in the final classification at the end of the season).

The first international "Motorcycle" racecross of Nations” took place in 1947 in The Hague (Netherlands). This race continues to occur each year in a different country.

Major competition, the Motocross des nations (MXDN) contested at the end of the season, brings together the best drivers from each nation. The best American pilots are also often present, which makes this competition one of the rare occasions in the year when the pilots of the two major competitions oppose each other. Each nation fields three riders in different engine sizes (250cc, 3cc, and Open).

This is the main motorcycle eventcross par teams. The 2022 edition will be held on the mythical circuit of Red Bud (Michigan) next September 24 and 25. In 2023, the competition will take place in Ernée (France).

Motorcycle competitionscross framed par FIM has several categories:

- MXGP, formerly MX1 for 2 cc engines and 250 cc engines.

- 2 for 2 cc engines and 125 cc engines.

- 3 for 2 cc engines and 500 cc engines, deleted since 4 cc.

- Side-car : from 350 cm³ to 750 cm³ 2-stroke and up to 1 cm³ 000-stroke.

- Quad: from 85 cc 2-stroke up to 750cc.

The 2-stroke engines pollute more than the 4-stroke engines, they are gradually being abandoned for the 4-strokes only. Environmental constraints (pollution) push to gradually abandon the 2-stroke engine, which is hardly used at high level anymore. Austrian manufacturer KTM is producing the 150 KTM with a 2cc 150-stroke engine in order to compete in the same class as the 3's 250-stroke.

There is also a very popular competition that stems from motorcyclingcross (MX): the supercross (SX).

This more spectacular American practice is simply motorcyclingcross indoor. It takes place on an artificial track laid out indoors, in a stadium or in an exhibition centre. It is a short track which is more open to jumps and overtaking. In France par example, the Supercross de Bercy has always attracted crowds and the media. The first test of Supercross which took place in France in September 1977, during the Bol d'or, organized on an artificial ground marked out with a bulldozer, within the enclosure of the circuit of Le Mans.
