Running-in is a period of adaptation during which the mechanical parts of the motorcycle will polish themselves in order to obtain a perfect fit. All the elements of the motorcycle roam, but the one that is most directly impacted is the engine. A good break-in is the guarantor of good power and good torque, as well as optimum engine operation.
This period is not just about the engine. It’s also an effective way to familiarize yourself with your new mount.
You should know that all new engines always have small imperfections or roughness. The function of lapping is to file away these asperities or machining defects. How ? By carrying out progressive and repeated rubbing which will polish or sharpen the contours or the angles of the parts.
According to some professionals, thanks to recent technological advances recorded in mechanical construction, motorcycle running-in would be part of bad memories.
However, this operation is still recommendedar the builders. In addition, breaking in your motorcycle does not present any risk. On the other hand, not doing so presents potential risks (engine which pulls badly and wears out quickly).
When it comes to motorcycle break-in, engine break-in comes first. It is still one of the essential parts of the bike.
During the first turns of the wheel of your motorcycle, avoid exploiting its engine to the maximum of its capacities. You will need, for a given period, to ride following certain recommendations, so as to enable him to adapt. This adaptation period is defined par the machine builder.
This information would normally be recorded in the motorcycle's owner's or service manual. If not, ask your dealer. Lubrication is very important, especially when it comes to breaking in a 125cc motorcycle at 2 strokes.
As a rule, the engine break-in is done during the first 1000 kilometers driven par a motorcycle. The operation is carried out in several parts or stages. In accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, after reaching a plateau (500 kilometers par example), the engine speed can be increased gradually until cruising speed is gradually reached.
Example of maximum engine speed:
The first 800 kilometers: 5000 laps.
Up to 1600 kilometers: 8000 laps.
Beyond 1600 kilometers: 14 thousand laps.
Note that traffic in urban areas is more conducive to motorcycle running-in. It imposes changes of speed, during stops, traffic jams, etc. It is therefore preferable to avoid driving on motorways or national roads during this period. This will prevent constant speeding and the engine will "learn" that there are multiple rpms.
During the first outings, have fun accelerating and slowing down: this stress on the gearbox will allow it to adapt to normal operation. And this repetition will make it easier to shift through all the gears.
Par against, the very bad idea would be to go in one go at 500 thousand kilometers. We always remain progressive.
Par elsewhere, city transport can be very unpredictable. If you have to, for one reason or another, exceed the maximum speed associated with a stage, don't hesitate and open the throttle! It is not useful to put yourself in danger to preserve the running-in of the motorcycle. The operation will not be compromised!
Finally, during the motorcycle break-in, the new parts rub together. This friction produces many metal particles which end up in the engine oil. This then becomes particularly viscous and loses its lubricating properties. Replacing its engine oil after the first 1000 kilometers becomes imperative.
During the first rides, take frequent breaks to check tire pressure (risk of bursting or off-rim tire), chain tension (risk of derailment), the oil level (on flat ground) and adjust the idle when the engine is warm. The dealer will usually tell you the ideal idle level.
Tips: It is admitted that on a motorcycle, until the second revision (that of the 8 or 10 thousand km), one is always in the running-in period. The engine is released gradually, gradually giving the maximum of its potential. So there's no need to think that after the magic milestone of 000 kilometers, you can finally always ride in the red zone and push hard. This would continue to weaken the engine. Go gradually and take a peak in the turns from time to time, just to get used to your freshly "honed" mechanics.
Motorcycle break-in is not just about the engine. The tires also require your attention. They are what keep you on the road.
At this level, we note that new motorcycle tires are covered with a layer of paraffin. Although useful for demolding and preservation, it leads to a lack of adhesion. Also, avoid rushing the tires at least for the first 200 miles. Adopt a smooth ride and take as little angle as possible.
Also note that the running-in of the tires is carried out at each tire change. It may seem obvious but it costs nothing to remind you.
For a perfect motorcycle break-in, progressiveness remains the key word. To break in motorcycle brake pads, always brake moderately for at least the first hundred miles. Avoid compressing the lever to the maximum or braking for a long time, otherwise the motorcycle brake pads will freeze and lose their effectiveness.
Of course, the running-in of motorcycle brake pads must be carried out each time you change motorcycle brake pads, and not only on a new two-wheeler.
- Do not replace the engine oil when the first thousand kilometers are reached.
- Adopt aggressive driving, it is imperative to practice flexible driving and favor a gradual increase in engine speed.
- Dwell on the same engine speed. Driving at all speeds and in all gears promotes good break-in.
- Ride two on the bike. No passenger during the break-in! Indeed, an additional weight stresses the engine more.
- Avoid climbing hills that are too steep or too long.

- Ride at a moderate pace.

- Take winding roads as much as possible in order to vary driving styles.
