How to read motorcycle tire dimensions

Information about tyres for 50cc motorcycles, scooters, 125cm3 motorcycles and mopeds

Discover on the tables below all the information concerning motorcycle, scooter and moped tyres. You will find the equivalence inches / millimeters as well as the load index and the speed index.

In the example above: 110 / 80-18 62 P Here are the numbers:

110 / 80 = dimensions in millimeters (110 = tire width / 80 = tire height / width ratio)

18 = rim dimension in inches

62 = load index

P = speed index

the sizes given below are for all tyre brands (Michelin , Mitas, Hutchinson, Continental ...) and all types (enduro, supermotard, cross).

What does 120/70 R17 mean on a motorcycle tire?

This marking indicates a width of 120 mm, an aspect ratio of 70%, a radial tire (R) and a rim diameter of 17 inches.

Can you change the original size of your tires?

Changing dimensions without respecting the manufacturer's tolerances can affect safety and make the motorcycle non-compliant with homologation.

Where can I find the recommended size for my tires?

The size is indicated on the sidewall of the original tire, in the motorcycle manual or on a technical label on the frame or swingarm.

What is the difference between a 17 and 18 inch tire?

An 18-inch tire has a larger diameter, which can affect the seat height, handling, and behavior of the motorcycle at high speeds.

What are speed and load indices used for?

The speed index indicates the maximum speed supported par the tire. The load index corresponds to the maximum weight that the tire can safely support.

What do they mean TL and TT on a motorcycle tire?

TL means "Tubeless" (without an inner tube) and TT means "Tube Type" (with an inner tube). These instructions must be followed to ensure a good seal.

Can I fit a wider tire than the original one?

It's possible, but it changes the balance of the bike. You must ensure that the rim is compatible and that the mounting tolerance remains within the permitted standards.
