TUTORIAL ADJUSTING THE BREAKER OF YOUR MOPED

Ce tutorial aims at you help set the breaker on your typical moped Peugeot 102. The principle is identical for other brands and models of mopeds without electronic ignition.

Le breaker is used to regularly interrupt the electrical supply to cause the spark necessary to start the cyclo. It contains platinum screws, and in fact that was its usual name in the past. Note that some mopeds with electronic ignition no longer use it.

In the ignition system of a motor vehicle, it is the part used to manage the spark to the spark plug.

The ignition timing allows the mixture of air and fuel to explode when the piston is at top dead center.

As a reminder, top dead center (photo 1) designates the moment when the piston is at its highest position in the cylinder. Conversely, bottom dead center (photo 2) designates the moment when the piston is at its lowest position.

HOW TO ADJUST THE BREAKER ON YOUR MOPED

adjust breakers step

1) Remove the fasteners and the ignition cover.

adjust breakers step

2) Unplug the suppressor.

adjust breakers step

3) Remove the candle.

adjust breakers step

4) Install in place of the spark plug the piston lock.

adjust breakers step

5) Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to bring the piston to the stop.

adjust breakers step

6) The ignition rotor is now blocked, you can unscrew the nut.

adjust breakers step

7) Insert the flywheel puller into the center of the rotor.

adjust breakers step

8) Using the combination wrenches, tighten the steering wheel puller screw.

adjust breakers step

9) Remove the rotor.

adjust breakers step10

11) Here is the breaker.

adjust breakers step11

11) Remove the piston lock.

adjust breakers step12

11) Insert the timing pin into the spark plug location. The timing pin will allow the position of the piston to be measured precisely.

adjust breakers step13

11) Set the gauge to zero.

adjust breakers step14

11) By turning the crankshaft, the piston will come into contact with the pin and lift the rod to TDC (top dead center).

adjust breakers step15

11) Tighten the rod screw to maintain the adjustment. The piston must be at Top Dead Center in order to be able to shift the ignition point.

adjust breakers step 16

11) The piston must be lowered by 2.5 mm before TDC using the pin.

adjust breakers step17

11) ATTENTION: the position of the candle is not necessarily vertical. As here, the candle being at an angle, we put 2.9 mm to actually have 2.5 mm in advance. This parameter will be taken into account in the calculation.

adjust breakers step18

11) Rotate the crankshaft a quarter turn counterclockwise.

adjust breakers step19

11) Screw the pin 2.9 turns with the help of the scale.

adjust breakers step20

11) Return the piston to its stop. From this point, the opening of the breaker can begin.

adjust breakers step 21

11) On the ignition rotor there is a cam which will activate the breaker.

adjust breakers step 22

11) Present the rotor.

adjust breakers step

11) It is necessary to adjust the distance of the breaker to the maximum opening.

adjust breakers step

11) Take a 0.40 mm wedge, slide it between the tracks of the breaker.

adjust breakers step

11) If the wedge does not fit, you will have to loosen the screw to adjust the breaker.

adjust breakers step

11) Then tighten the retaining screw.

adjust breakers step

11) Check the correct passage of the wedge.

adjust breakers step

11) Locate the mark on the rotor. Position this mark at the spark plug wire passage mark.

adjust breakers step

11) Check that the opening of the breaker corresponds to the mark on the rotor.

To be sure of the moment of opening, you can use a sheet of rolling paper (0.02 mm).

adjust breakers step

11) Place the foil between the breaker tracks.

adjust breakers step31

11) Turn the rotor so that the sheet is retained.

adjust breakers step32

11) Pull the foil lightly and turn the rotor to the mark. The sheet must be freed.

adjust breakers step33

11) Tap lightly with a mallet to hold the rotor in place.

adjust breakers step34

11) Reset the rod to TDC (top dead center).

adjust breakers step35

11) Rotate the rotor counterclockwise.

adjust breakers step36

11) Screw the pin 2.9 turns.

adjust breakers step37

11) Turn the rotor all the way and check that it is at the mark.

adjust breakers step38

11) Remove the rod.

adjust breakers step39

11) Replace the piston lock.

adjust breakers step40

11) Replace the rotor nut and tighten.

adjust breakers step 41

11) After removing the piston lock, replace the spark plug and tighten it.

adjust breakers step 42

11) Reconnect the suppressor.

adjust breakers step

11) Replace the ignition cover.

11) Replace the ignition cover fasteners.

Installing a new ignition on your moped is quite simple but requires patience and precision.

You can change your complete ignition but you can also change the parts independently. As Par example the ignition coil, CDI box, ignition cover, ignition stator and rotor.

Remember to consult the other categories of electricity to find all your parts: electricity accessories, candle, switch box , Speedometer, lighting, beam and components, horn.
