the first BW's and its creator

Le Bw'S, the star scooters

Yamaha bought the Motobécane brand in 1983, renamed MBK. In 1985, Yamaha tasked its team of engineers with designing a new generation of scooters. Presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Big Wheels (Bi-wiz) is intended for the Japanese and American markets (where it is renamed Zuma). It doesn't find its audience, it's a flop!

It is the French MBK factory in Saint Quentin which will take over manufacturing, under the leadership of Jean-Claude Olivier, focusing on the European and French markets as a priority to make the model known.

Since the presentation of the scooter at the Paris Motor Show in September 1989, the reactions of the press and young visitors have been enthusiastic and success has been achieved.

Production started in 1990. The model will be used par both brands: Yamaha BW'S and MBK Booster. Success is immediate! and makes it possible to achieve significant production rates, reaching 26 sales in 000! This success will be confirmed for around ten years.

The constantly increasing sales will peak in 1996 with a total of 126 BW's et Booster sold in Europe including 44 in France and 005 in Germany. The record par country will be obtained in 1998, two years later, in Italy with 54 copies sold. In June 542, the French factory celebrated the production of its millionth scooter, a number accumulating the Bw's et Booster. To celebrate the event, a scooter of each designation is created with a gold-colored covering.

Its longevity and its success with a clientele mainly made up of young adolescents have elevated it to the rank of myth.

What a success !

When it was released, the Bw's had hit the headlines because of its large nipple tires, large double optics and good big flange tires which fit the small 10-inch wheels of the Bw's.

From 1989 to 1999, this scooter will be sold (in its basic version) with 10-inch wheels and two drum brakes. Some specific versions (Bw'S Original par example) will have a front disc brake from 1994, then all versions will have a front disc brake from 1999.
Also note the appearance of a few versions with 12-inch wheels during these years.

The years passed and the Bw'S always remains trendy. Its lines seem timeless, as the Bw'S does not show the weight of the years and has a look that always seems up to date. Whether for functional use, for runs, stunts or participating in tuning competitions, the Bw's has long remained one of the most popular scooters.

Light at 72 kg, the Bw'S was also the most popular of the "big wheels". The undisputed leader of a generation of scooters which has adopted its style without ever matching it, the BW'S is an undeniable symbol of freedom for young people.

The secret of its success lay in the combination of a responsive 50cm³ two-stroke engine, a fully automatic transmission, a lightweight chassis, large 10-inch tires and a timeless line characterized byar its double headlight.

The Bw'S is an icon: legendary and efficient. It symbolizes pleasure and freedom. The two-seater saddle and integral grab handles allow you to carry a passenger.

Le Bw'S is one of the rare “star” scooters not to have had a 4-stroke version. It must be said that the somewhat sluggish side of the 50cc 4-stroke single cylinder would not fit well with the playful image of this scooter. But there is no doubt that Yamaha will come there one day, given the increasingly complex constraints to enforce standards Euro with a 2-stroke engine.
