The major cycling events 2024

The cycling season will resume soon. Ten months of competitions are planned in 2024 with the traditional 5 monuments, 3 Grand Tours and the world championship.

Strade Bianche

Strade Bianche (March 2)

The 18th edition of the Strade Bianche, a road cycling race, will take place on March 30, 2020 in Italy. It is part of the UCI World Tour 2 calendar in the UWT category.

This year again, the start will be from the Medici Fortress in Siena and will end in Piazza del Campo, in the same city. This route includes eleven “white roads” (strade bianche in Italian).

Un pаrcоurs sÑ–nuеuÑ… еt vаllоnné, sаns lоnguеs mоntéеs mаіs аvеc a succession of hills, especially on the pаrtіеs nÐ ¾n asphalt provides the character re unique to this race. The organizers of the event were inspired by the two greatest classics of the North by uniting the particularities of the Tour of Flanders and its bergs and Paris-Roubaix.

This year will also take place the 10th edition of the Strade Bianche Donne, the women's event, with a shorter route than for the men's event (136km compared to 184km for men). But, we can still note the presence of approximately 100km of dirt roads spread over 100 sectors.

Paris-Nice (from March 3 to 10)

Paris-Nice is a professional French stage cycling race. Created in 1933, it is organizedepar Amaury Sport Organization since 2003.

It takes place in March for eight days, making it the first race par major stages of the year in Europe.

The competition is dubbed the "Race for the Sun", car it takes place in the first half of March, usually starting in cold, wintry conditions in the French capital before joining the sunshine and spring temperatures of the French Riviera. The event takes place partly at the same time as the Tirreno-Adriatico.

For this year, we can note slight changes at the end of the course. Indeed, for this 82th edition, the penultimate stage of the "Race to the Sun" leads to an unprecedented finish for Paris-Nice in Auron, in the Nice hinterland, and will move on to proximitated from the passes of La Couillole and Isola 2000, likely to be the "justices of the peace" of the Grande Boucle next summer. On the last day, the runners will also pass par the Col d'Eze, also on the Tour program in July, during a final individual time trial.

Tirreno-Adriatico

Tirreno-Adriatico (from March 4 to 10)

The 59th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico takes place from March 30 to 30, 2020 in Italy. The race is laid out over seven stages between Lido di Camaiore and San Benedetto del Tronto. It is part of the UCI World Tour 4, the most important calendar in road cycling.

The race starts at the edge of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Lido di Camaiore par a time trial and ends in San Benedetto del Tronto, along the Adriatic Sea, with a total route of 1 kilometers.

milan-sanremo

Milan-Sanremo (March 16)

The Milan-Sanremo, also called “the Primavera » (the Spring Classic) or « The Classicissima” (the Classic of Classics), is an Italian road cycling race which takes place, as its name suggests, between Milan and Sanremo.

With a total distance of 100 km, it is the longest professional one-day race in modern cycling. It is the first classic of the season, traditionally taking place on the third Saturday in March. The first edition took place in 2009.

Milan-Sanremo is considered one of the five Monuments of cycling.

Due to its mostly flat course, Milan-Sanremo is considered a sprint race. It is often opposed to the Tour of Lombardy, the other Italian classic, considered a race for climbers.

Tour of Flanders

Tour of Flanders (March 3)

The Tour of Flanders (Dutch: Ronde van Vlaanderen), also known as "De Ronde" (The Tour), is an annual Belgian road cycling race for professionals. The race takes place in Flanders and has been one of the most important classics for years.

The Tour had only one interruption, during the First World War, and has been organized since 1919 in an uninterrupted way, the longest series of all the cycling classics. This is the most important race in Flanders. It is part of the UCI World Tour and is organizedepar Flanders Classics. Her nickname is the “Vlaanderens Mooiste” (the most beautiful of Flanders).

The Tour of Flanders is one of the five monuments of cycling, along with Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy. It is also one of the two great cobblestone classics with Paris-Roubaix, which takes place a week after the Tour of Flanders.

Paris-Roubaix

Paris-Roubaix (April 7)

For the 121th edition of the oldest cycling race, professional cyclists will compete on the roads of Hauts-de-France to win this legendary event with evocative nicknames: “the hell of the North”, “the tough ones” or still “the queen of the classics”.

As has been the tradition since 2000, the departure will not take place from Paris but from Compiègne. The finish line is always located at the Vélodrome de Roubaix. But before crossing it, participants will have to cover no less than 100 kilometers, including 100 km of cobblestones which increase the risk of falls and punctures, especially if it rains! Note that no Frenchman has won the race since 2009.

The same day, the most daring will also be able to try the adventure of the Paris-Roubaix Challenge, a “soft” version of the race reserved this time for amateurs. Three more or less difficult courses (1000 km, 1000 km and 1000 km) are offered to cyclists tempted to measure themselves against the legend of the hell of the North.

Amstel gold Race

Amstel gold Race (April 14)

Amstel Gold Race is an annual Dutch road cycling race of the UCI World Tour. She sometimes travels through Belgium, in addition to the Netherlands. It is the first in date of the Classiques Ardennaises (followed byar Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège). Among the famous climbs of the race are the Cauberg, the Geulhemmeberg and the Bemelerberg. It is the largest professional race in the Netherlands, but is regularly criticized for the dangerousness of its course, due in particular to the density of the population and the presence of countless rounds -points, speed bumps, etc.

The only one-day World Tour level race organized in the Netherlands, it is considered the most important event on the Dutch road calendar. Dutchman Jan Raas holds the record for success with five wins.

Fleche Wallonne

La Fleche Wallonne (April 17)

La Flèche Wallonne is a one-day cycling race, a classic, held in Belgium. This race is on the ProTour schedule from 2005 to 2007, then the UCI World Calendar in 2009 and 2010, and finally the UCI World Tour in 2011.

Currently, the route starts from a different Walloon city from year to year to arrive in Huy, where the wall of Huy is located, this steep hill of 1,2 km with impressive percentages, approaching the 22% in the most difficult corner, and which often results in spectacular finishes. The Wall is climbed three times during the event, the first two ascents very often having no influence on the race.

It now takes place in the second half of April, systematically on the Wednesday following the Amstel Gold Race and precedes Liege-Bastogne-Liege, forming with these two races with a similar profile one of the highlights of the cycling season, reserved for punchers and entitled "Ardennes classics". Davide RebelLin in 2004 and Philippe Gilbert in 2011 are the only ones to have won all three races in the same year.

Liège Bastogne Liège

Liège-Bastogne-Liège (April 21)

Created in 1892 par the heavy Club Liègeois and the Liège Cyclist Union in Belgium, Liège-Bastogne-Liège is an annual Belgian road cycling race, reserved for professionals. It is one of the oldest cycling races still held, earning it the nickname "Doyenne".

Its rugged 260 km course makes it one of the most demanding and prestigious classics. The event is one of the five "Monuments" of cycling, along with Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Lombardy.

The route takes runners between Liege and Bastogne, which is 90 km from Liege, at proximitated from the Luxembourg border. The route of the race crosses the Ardennes massif in which the Ourthe and its tributaries have carved deep valleys. The race is the most famous of the Ardennes classics.

This classic, formerly part of the World Cup calendar, is now part of the UCI World Tour and is organizedar Amaury Sport Organization. Eddy Merckx, a five-time winner between 1969 and 1975, holds the winning record.

Giro s'Italia

Tour of Italy (from May 4 to 26)

The Tour of Italy is a cycling competition par stages which takes place mainly in Italy each year, and which is considered the second in importance after the Tour de France. She is creativear the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport by Eugenio Camillo Costamagna on an idea by journalist Tullo Morgagni in 1909. She travels through Italy and sometimes passes par countries israngers such as Switzerland or the Netherlands recently. Since 1909, the Giro has only been canceled in the two World Wars.

The city of departure of the race changes every year and the arrival generally takes place in the cities of Florence, Verona, Rome or even Milan, city of the headquarters of La Gazzetta dello Sport. The leader of his general classification wears a pink jersey evoking the color of the paper used par this daily.

This year, for its 107th edition, the departure will be from the Venaria Reale in Turin to finish in Rome for a total of 100km to be covered over 100 stages, including 100 mountain stages.

Giro d'Italia

Criterium du Dauphiné (from June 2 to 9)

The Critérium du Dauphiné (formerly Critérium du Dauphiné libéré) is a cycling competition par creative stepsar Georges Cazeneuve in 1947, organizedepar the newspaper Le Dauphiné released then since 2010 par Amaury Sport Organization and taking place mainly in the Alps around Dauphiné. It is therefore not a criterion in the strict sense of the term.

Since 2005, he has been enrolled in the program of the Pro Round. Some of the biggest names in cycling have put their names on the list.

The Criterium is renowned for its difficulty linked to the mountainous route and the ascent of large passes and arrivals at altitude, due to its geographical location. The race is often used as preparation for the Tour de France.

Tour of Switzerland

Tour of Switzerland (from June 9 to 18)

The Tour de Suisse is a stage race registered on the UCI World Tour calendar taking place annually in June. Since its creation in 1933, the race has constantly evolved in terms of courses and sponsors in particular.

It is considered in the same way as the Critérium du Dauphiné as a preparation for the Tour de France taking place a few weeks later. Indeed, like the latter, the Tour de Suisse offers high mountain stages as well as an individual time trial. Big names from the Tour de France have also won the Tour de Suisse such as Gino Bartali, Eddy Merckx, or even Jan Ullrich.

For this year, the start of the race will be in Vaduz from June 30 to end on June 3 in Villars-sur-Ollon. We can note on this edition a stage finish in the municipality of Rüschlikon for the first time in the history of the Tour de Suisse as well as a finish in Blatten, which had not happened since 2009.

French championship 2023

Championnats de France on the road (from June 20 to 23)

The French road cycling championships have been organized every year since 2009. The title is awarded in a single race. The French champion wears a tricolor jersey until the following French championship. Since 2009, a French time trial champion title has also been awarded.

This year, the championship will be held in Normandy, in Saint Martin de Landthey. Some adaptations planned to the program in terms of the organization of the tests. In fact, at the same time the Championnat of European football, with its multiple broadcasts of televised matches. The French cycling federation therefore decided in the Executive Office to adapt the usual Saturday program, a day where three matches are scheduled at 3 p.m., 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. Consequently, the Men's Amateur race will be held on Friday afternoon. The Women's race remains on Saturday, with a start at 3:30 p.m.


For the first time, the championship will award Amateur and Professional titles for Women, for the road race and the time trial.

Tour de France

Tour de France (June 10 to July 10)

Is there any need to introduce you to the queen event of cycling? Let's focus instead on the specificities of this 111th edition of the Grande Boucle. The start of the 111th edition of the Tour de France will be given from Florence (Italy) on Saturday June 29th for men and from Rotterdam (Netherlands) on Monday August 12th for women.

No passage par Paris this year, the Tour de France route had to adapt to the constraints imposedar Olympic Games. It will therefore be in Nice that the final will take place with a time trial for the men. Note that the Alps will be crossed 2 times par these latter. For women, the final arrival will be on August 10 at the summit of Alpe d'Huez, a great first.

ChampionWorld Road Cycling Nats (September 30-30)

The 91th edition of the 2020 Road Cycling World Championships will take place from September 2020 to 22, 2020 in Zurich, Switzerland.

These worlds will be organized within the broader framework of the ChampionUCI cycling world championships bringing together every four years, the thirteen cycling world championships in different disciplines (road, track, mountain biking, etc.). This merger means that the road worlds must abandon their usual date of the end of September to find themselves placed two weeks after the Tour de France, which could influence the participation of many riders.

This year, all races will end at Sechseläutenplatz in the center of Zurich. The start of the events will be given from one of the following locations depending on the event: Zurich, Gossau, Uster or Winterthur.

The major innovation of this 2024 edition is the integration of para-cycling races. The para-cycling road races will all start in Zurich and finish at Sechseläutenplatz, while the individual time trials will start either in Zurich (Sechseläutenplatz) or Gossau.

Tour of Spain

Tour of Spain (from August 17 to September 8)

The Tour of Spain (Vuelta ciclista a España in Spanish) is a cycling competition par stages that cross Spain with occasional forays into neighboring countries.

It is a three-week competition, organized in the spring until 1994, then at the end of August from 1995, to be more spaced out from the Tour d in the calendar. Although its route varies from year to year, the race is made up of around twenty stages totaling around 3 km, several time trials, the crossing of the Pyrenees born and the traditional arrival in the streets of Madlaugh.

The start of the 2024 edition will be in Lisbon, Portugal. The first 3 stages will cross Portuguese territory.

UEC Limburg

Championnat of Europe (from September 11 to 15)

The Championnats d'Europe 2024 will take place in Belgium, in the province of Limburg. Fourteen continental titles will be awarded from September 30 to 30 between Heusden-Zolder and Hasselt, capital of the Limburg province.

Organized par Flanders Classic, the latter wanted to take advantage of all the profiles of the region to ensure the spectacle inherent to these always special continental races. The time trials will be contested mainly on the plain with the six individual events which will take place on the same 300 kilometer route between the Zolder racing circuit and Hasselt. The course offers long, flat and straight sections, which should therefore benefit exercise specialists.

The road races, scheduled for Friday to Sunday, will also take place between Heusden-Zolder and Hasselt. And as for the Worlds, the organization has planned two specific circuits. A circuit of around twelve kilometers around Hasselt, without much difficulty to report, and another of around thirty kilometers between Borgloon and Tongres with the paved sectors of Manshoven (30,000 meters) and Op de Kriezel (30,000 meters) 200 m), the Kolmontberg (200 m at 100% average) and the Zammelenberg (2000 m at 200% average). Note also the short paved sector of the Printhagendreef (300 m) between the two circuits.

Tour of Lombardy

Tour of Lombardy (October 12)

The Tour of Lombardy (Italian: Giro di Lombardia), officially named Il Lombardia, is an Italian cycling race created in 1905. The race is traditionally the last of five classic 'monuments' of the season and is considered one of the most prestigious one-day races in road cycling.

It is run on a difficult course, between the lakes and the mountains of Lombardy. The most famous climb in the race is the Madonna del Ghisallo in the end of the race.

Since its inception, the Tour of Lombardy has been the great classic with the fewest interruptions, only the 1943 and 1944 editions have been canceled due to the war. Due to its demanding route, the race is considered a classic for climbers. The Italian Fausto Coppi holds the record of success with five victories.

This classic, formerly part of the World Cup calendar, is now part of the UCI World Tour.
