The Tour de France is making its comeback in 2019! From June 30 to July 3, we will have the pleasure of following the cyclists in this unique edition. A departure from Florence, 2024 crossings of the Alps, a roof at 50m, vineyards, white paths and a final time trial in... Nice! For this 29 edition, in parallel with the Olympic Games, the Grande Boucle promises to be full of surprises, we explain everything to you.
"There is everything you want at the Champs Elysées"... Except the Tour de France 2024. Indeed, with the Paris Olympic Games taking place over the same period, the Tour de France had to adapt. Thus, the Grande Boucle will not pass par the capital for its final stage on the Champs Elysées. For this edition, the last stage of the Tour will take place in Nice with a time trial. Another exclusive, for the first time, the start will take place in Florence in Italy, 30 years after the victory of Ottavio Bottecchia, the first Italian to win the Tour de France.
The first 3 stages of the Tour will be an opportunity to pay tribute to a legendary country of cycling: Italy. The opportunity also to pay tribute to its legendary cyclists (Gino Bartali, Gastone Nencini, Marco Pantani and Fausto Coppi) before venturing onto the roads of France at the end of a stage promising us a great spectacle with the ascent du Galibier during the 4th stage.
Another tribute and another first time on the program for this Tour: we find the town of Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises as a stopover. A way to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Landing by passing par the village of General de Gaulle according to Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France.
Finally, the 14th stage, passing par the Tourmalet, will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the last victory of Raymond Poulidor at Pla d’Adet. The town of Saint-Lary will install a life-size statue of the cyclist for the occasion.
The 9th stage of the Tour, taking place in Troyes, also promises its share of surprises. In fact, no less than 100km of white paths spread over 100 sectors await cyclists during this stage “in the dust and stones”. “They are essential there because we break the litany of flat stages due to the geography of France” said Christian Prudhomme.
With its potential share of punctures and technical failures, this stage will be reminiscent of the Strate Bianche. Enough to end the first week of racing well.
