Motorcycle and scooter approved helmets

Some indications on the standards in force

Let's start par remind you that wearing a helmet has been compulsory since June 28 according to article R1973-431 of the Highway Code. However, when choosing a helmet for the use of your two-wheeler it is important to know that it is subject to precise regulations and approvals. The helmets are regulated par Regulation number 22 of the international agreement on uniform requirements for the approval of protective helmets and their screens for drivers and passengers of motorcycles and mopeds. In Europe, it is the UNECE (Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations) which manages these regulations. The applicable standards for helmets are known as ECE-22 et ECE-22. Be careful though, since 2009, ECE 2000-2000 helmets are prohibited for sale but the motorcyclist can still wear an ECE 20-20 helmet if the latter is still in good condition.

How to identify an approved helmet?

As we have seen above, helmets are subject to precise standards and approvals. We will now see how to recognize the helmets that meet these criteria. Each helmet must be provided with a green label (if it meets French standards) or white (if it meets European standards). If the label is of another color (neither green nor white) the helmet is then not recognized in France. Then, if it is a white label and therefore a European homologation, there will be an "E" on it followed by a number. ro which indicates the country of origin of the homologation:

1 for Germany, 2 for France, 3 for Italy, 4 for the Netherlands, 5 for Sweden, 6 for Belgium, 7 for Hungary, 8 for Czechoslovakia, 9 for Spain, 10 for Yugoslavia, 12 for Austria, 13 for Luxembourg, 14 for Switzerland, 16 for Norway, 17 for Finland, 18 for Denmark, 19 for Romania, 20 for Poland, 21 for Portugal , 22 for Russia, 23 for Greece, 24 for Ireland, 25 for Croatia, 26 for Slovenia, 27 for Slovakia, 28 for Belarus, 29 for Estonia, 31 for Bosnia, 32 for Latvia, 34 for Bulgaria, 36 for Lithuania, 37 for Turkey, 39 for Azerbaijan, 40 for Macedonia, 42 for the European Community, 43 for Japan, 45 for Australia, 46 for the Ukraine, 47 for South Africa and 48 for New Zealand.

Here are some guidelines for reading a helmet label:

The different types of helmets are: P / J: modular helmets; P: full face helmets; J: jet helmets.

It should also be added that in France pilots and passengers on two wheels must imperatively equip their helmets with 4 reflective strips on the front, rear and sides of their helmets. Without these bands, the helmet will not be recognized as approved and the user is liable to a fine of 135 € and a withdrawal of 3 points on his driving license.

Which helmet to choose?

Range of approved full face helmets

The full face helmet is the motorcycle helmet that offers you the most protection. It will indeed cover your entire head and your face. The chin and jaw are also protected in the event of impact. The full-face helmet is therefore the type of helmet to have if you want to benefit from optimal protection in the event of an accident. In addition, it will also provide you with good weather protection. However, we can note that it can be rather unpleasant to wear during periods of high heat, it can also be more sensitive to the arrival of fogging. The full-face helmet will also be the type of helmet that will be the heaviest to wear despite the effort of manufacturers who constantly test new materials that are both lighter and just as resistant. The vision will also be reduced, this is why we advise to opt for a full-face helmet on your long journeys at higher speed and to direct you towards a helmet Jet for your city journeys which will be made at a slower speed.

Headset range Jet approved

The most glaring when we use a helmet Jetis the weight, it is indeed much lighter than the full face helmet. The jet helmet will also offer you a good guarantee of security, it will indeed protect both your skull and your temples. The absence of a chin guard will ensure better ventilation, a wider field of vision but also the possibility of being able to communicate with a possible passenger. Having a wider field of vision will allow you to have less to turn your head, so it will be ideal in an urban environment that requires you to have an eye everywhere! However, we must note that the jet helmet will be less efficient than a full-face helmet in terms of protection. It will not protect your lower face during a possible fall, it will also not protect you against insects. This is why we advise you to opt for this type of helmet if you are only driving around town and at a rather slow pace.

Please note: since 2009, helmets Jet are prohibited in Spain, the DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) deeming them too ineffective in terms of protection.

Range of approved modular helmets

The modular helmet is a helmet resembling a full face helmet, however you can put the chin strap up in order to open it and give it a helmet look Jet. All modular helmets do not allow you to ride with the chin rest open, you will need to study the different models during your purchase in order to find the helmet that will suit you. This type of helmet will be heavier than a full face helmet, but it will offer you an ideal compromise between full face helmet and helmet Jet. You will therefore have the advantage of being able to drive both in town but also on journeys at higher speed while benefiting from adequate security. These helmets can be subject to different approvals, they can indeed be as a helmet Jet (J), full-face helmet (P) or modular helmet that will allow you to use it without a chin strap (P / J).

Helmets cross can be used for many purposes. Indeed originally designed for motorcyclescross, they can also be used for leisure. These helmets will have a more compact chin strap as well as a visor, you will also need to get protective glasses to protect your eyes. Helmets cross can be used on the road although they are not designed for this use car they protect less than a full face helmet. Protective masks will also be sensitive to fogging which can annoy you if you drive long distances. We therefore advise you to orient yourself towards this type of helmet if you want to adopt a look cross, however, if you want to travel long distances, do not hesitate to use a full-face helmet which will provide you with additional comfort and safety over long distances.
