How to choose the right scooter?

The essentials to know before choosing your scooter

First of all, before choosing your scooter it is important that you define your needs. Will you use it to cover short distances between your place of residence and your place of work or study? To make the same trip in the countryside? or in a big city which may need to pass byar a highway or a ring road? Do you want to buy a scooter for occasional rides?

Don't worry, there will always be a scooter suited to your needs! In order to see things more clearly, it is important to divide the different scooters into three main categories: 50 cc scooters, 3 cc scooters and scooters over 125 cc. We will see below that the type of license required to be able to ride these different scooters will differ depending on the power of the engine. We will also see that each of these engines will meet a specific need!

If you plan to use your scooter on a daily basis, choose a reliable scooter in summer and winter (par example on a new model which will inevitably be more reliable and less subject to breakdowns initially).

The different types of scooter

The scooters of 50 cm3

The 50 cc scooters are surely the best known and most used. You find them in all high school parking lots, in front of all supermarkets. And for good reason ! You don't need a license to drive them. They are in fact accessible from the age of 3, it is nevertheless compulsory to have the BSR (Road safety certificate) as well as ASSR (School Road Safety Certificate) to be able to drive them.

The 50 cm3 scooters are suitable for short distances and in town, they are in fact limited to 50 km/h, they will be suitable for adolescents as well as older people living in proximitated from their place of work or study. Price-wise, they are relatively affordable, count between €1500 and €3000 for the purchase of a new one.

The scooters of 125 cm3

Very present in large cities, 125 cm3 scooters are both affordable (count on average €4000 for the purchase of a new one) and versatile. They allow you to travel longer distances and are authorized to travel on motorways and ring roads of large cities. They are also suitable for people living several tens of kilometers from their workplace and shops (in the countryside par example).

However, to drive this type of scooter there are several options:

- You must hold a A1 permit (you must be at least 16 years old to pass this permit). This permit is valid for a period of 15 years.

- You can also drive 125 cm3 scooters if you are holders of the B permit by following a 7 hours training.

- Holders of a B license issued before March 1980 can drive them without having to take the training.

The larger scooters, also known as large engine scooters have motors similar to motorcycles. However, they retain the advantages of a scooter, they are indeed more manageable and go everywhere. They will be perfectly suited if you make long distance commuting trips, they can be used on all types of roads as well.

In terms of licenses, they are subject to the same regulations as motorcycles, you will indeed need to have the license A (Motorcycle licence). Regarding the price, you can count at least € 7500 for this type of scooter!
