How to choose the right lock?

The essentials to know before choosing your lock

If the theft of two-wheelers is in constant decline (declining by almost 4% since 2014), a motorcycle or a scooter still disappears every nine minutes in France. Mostly in urban areas (89%). And only 29% of stolen two-wheelers find their owner ... A good anti-theft device is therefore essential. Especially since it is a sine-qua-non condition to be covered par your motorcycle insurance, in the event of theft.

There are four families: the U which enclose the wheel, the chains, which allow the two-wheeler to be attached to a fixed point, the disc locks which keep the brakes on, the alarms and other devices.

The different types of anti-theft

motorcycle and scooter U-lock

The U lock

The U is the most common anti-theft device (64% of the market): easily transportable by motorbike, it is not infallible but considerably delays the theft.

With this type of mechanical lock, you protect yourself effectively against theft of opportunity, provided that the U blocks the wheel to an anchor. It can also be snapped around the wheel alone. Different sizes exist and some can easily be stored under the saddle in the compartment provided when riding. If you do not have the necessary space in a bag or top case, plan to install a support to secure your U when you are not stationary. It is strongly recommended not to carry it in a backpack, you could risk serious back injuries if you fall.

Chains and cables

Chain

Although it is more easily sectionable than a U, thechain lock remains an interesting device in protecting a motorcycle against the risk of theft. If the thief intends to easily take your machine but it is connected to a fixed point (post, barrier, etc.) par a steel chain, then his work will be very complicated! Some brands offer chains using more secure materials or anti-picking systems. By attaching your motorcycle with a chain, you increase your chances of seeing it again when you return! Available in different sizes, an anti-theft chain can even protect several motorcycles and scooters at the same time. It's convenient for home or work use, leaving it attached to the anchor point when you're not using it.

The cable

Lightweight and flexible, the cable is perfectly suited for use in addition to another device.

Special case: The handlebar lock

Mainly used par scooter riders, handlebar lock attaches on one hand to the base of the saddle and on the other hand to the end of the handlebars preventing the latter from turning. Less bulky than chains, cables and U-locks, it is also significantly less effective since it does not immobilize any wheel of your machine and does not attach it to any anchor point.

The handlebar lock consists of a padlock, a cable and a fixing. It is this attachment on the scooter which provides an anchor point and then allows the padlock to be attached. This system depends on the brand and model of scooter to be perfectly adapted.

However, you should know that U locks and chains are the most effective : much stronger than cables, they also allow the two-wheeler to be attached to a support such as a pole or a barrier, the best option to prevent it from shifting.

Disc locks

This type of lock blocks the wheel by placing itself on the brake disc. The motorcycle cannot be connected to a fixed point using a motorcycle disc lock, this anti-theft system should be considered as a complement. It cannot in fact guarantee you protection against kidnapping in a vehicle.

However, models with an alarm sensitive to machine movements may prove to be enough of a deterrent to save you from opportunistic theft. A thief may suspend his act if he feels in danger of being spotted. Easy to set up and space-saving, the disc lock is the ideal anti-theft device for short absences or when the motorcycle or scooter is parked in a secure place (guarded parking, garage, etc.) A thief will not be able to escape on the handlebars of your machine, but that will not prevent it from mounting it in a van. Resistant to forcing such as sawing, sledgehammer, levers or cutting, this anti-theft system often includes an alarm.

The main negative point of the disc lock is that it cannot be used on its own except for a short shutdown. The main positive point is its small footprint and its quick and easy use.

Other alarm devices

Alarms

First of all, it is better to choose a Alarm SRA approved ou NF certified. In addition to ensuring you against theft, this certification will offer you the guarantee of reliable and efficient equipment.

A two-wheeler alarm system consists of a central unit, a detector (movement, uprising ...), of a remote control (to stop the alarm remotely) and Mermaid.

If it does not eradicate theft - let's not dream - it turns out to be a good deterrent against thieves.

The motorcycle lock connected to your smartphone

This new anti-theft system offers dual protection: both mechanical andar its steel anti-theft type mini-U SRA approved and electronic with the communicator that sends information to your phone.

The "Watchdog": automatically linked to your smartphone, it then reacts to the slightest movement of the motorcycle. Whether it falls or is lifted, you are immediately alerted, as well as all users of the "Watchdog ". The idea is not to create crowds, but at the very least, to deter the thief.

The traceur GPS "Pegasus" is ideal for geolocating and tracking your vehicle in real time. Pégase is ECE R10 certified, which ensures you have a quality product. Thanks to its anti-discharge protection, your motorcycle's battery is always protected. Pegasus belongs to the category of traceurs mini GPS without sim card to install yourself car it is very compact and works without a subscription.

Tattooing or engraving

This anti-theft marking automatically and immediately results in the registration of the tattooed motorcycle in a national file available to: the police, the gendarmerie, customs, insurance companies. We remind you that the marking process also called engraving or tattooing is required par some insurance companies to insure against theft. In any case, if you buy a motorcycle or scooter that is already tattooed, you must request the tattoo certificate from the seller and make the necessary modifications. If your new acquisition is not tattooed, you must register in an engraving center in order to benefit from the undeniable advantages of such a system, a system which greatly contributes to curbing the scourge of theft.

How to choose the right lock?

One anti-theft device is good, two is even better Nothing can replace the good old anti-theft device chaining your motorcycle or scooter to a fixed point. This is the best way to prevent kidnapping, the most widely used of theft techniques. You also know, only certified anti-theft devices NF -recommended par la FFMC or marked class SRA(Safety and automobile repairs), along with the blocking of the steering of your machine, entitle you to cover and insurance from all insurers. There is even better, both for the security of your machine and for your wallet: two locks. Using another means of protection in addition to an anti-theft device (mechanical or not) will make the protection of your frame almost inviolable.

Anti-theft standards: why?

Quite simply because there is everything on the market: ineffective locks that can be broken in a few seconds stand alongside tested and certified models that last for about ten minutes. Only these quality anti-theft devices constitute real theft prevention.

Among these models, the price range is very wide car the different techniques used are more or less sophisticated. Among the cheapest products are U-shaped locks. But be careful, to be effective, they must be adapted to your machine.

The first essential rule is tohook your two wheels to a fixed pointeven for short-term parking.

If the shutdown is to last several hours, double the lock (one on each wheel). If you only have one lock, it is best to attach it to the rear wheel. This takes longer to dismantle.

Where possible, avoid parking your bike always in the same place.

Anti-theft devices are an interesting solution for fight effectively against theft of your motorcycle. They are also today required par insurance companies to claim a refund in the event of theft. If you opt for this type of protection for your two-wheeler, you must be able to find a suitable and approved model.
