2-stroke or 4-stroke engine?

How to choose the right engine for your mà © caboîte?

There are two main families of engine fitted to the two wheels: the engines 2 stroke and engines 4 stroke. While 4 times are the most popular, there are many models on the market that are equipped with 2 times.

While the differences between 2 and 4 engines may seem very technical, they have direct and clearly visible implications for the driver. Because the operation of a 2 and a 4 is not the same, the performance of the engine, its maintenance, its polluting emissions or even its sound are very different.

Here you will find some explanations to help you in your choice. Here are their particularities. Regardless of the engine chosen, the cycle is always carried out in 4 stages: Intake, Compression, Explosion, Exhaust.

THE 2 TIME ENGINE

ADVANTAGES :

The 2 time engine is more responsive than a 4 time engine. The piston only makes one trip per cycle. This is the main strength of the 2T engine: the acceleration is more vigorous. With identical displacement, an 2T engine is more powerful than an 4T engine.

Another quality of the 2T: it is generally lighter than an 4T motor, its design is simpler, there are fewer parts. An 2T engine is easier to maintain and therefore less expensive overhaul.

INCONVENIENTTS :

It is necessary to regularly addoil to lubricate the engine. Let us add that the liquid also has a cost (between 10 and 12 euros per liter). If you ride your 50cc 2T a lot, it's a budget not to be underestimated.

Polluting emissions are more numerous on an 2T engine: when gasoline is combusted with air and oil, the 2T engine lets more smoke escape than an 4T which never puts oil and gasoline in contact.

A 2 consumes more gasoline than a 4. The life of a 2 motor is often shorter than that of a 4 motor. The engine wears out faster. Finally the sound of a 2 engine is higher pitched than that of a 4 engine.

THE 4 TIME ENGINE

ADVANTAGES :

More elaborate, the 4-stroke engine is said to be more reliable and more robust than a 2-stroke engine. The torque of the 4 engine is smoother than that of a 2, which offers better driving comfort, even if it is less sporty than with a 2.

You don't have to add oil regularly. Remember to check from time to time that there is enough oil in the crankcase. An 4T engine still needs oil.

INCONVENIENTTS :

Its main flaw in the eyes of many drivers: the engine of a 4T lacks nervousness.
The engine of a 4 is often heavier than that of a 2.
The difference in jitters between an 2T engine and an 4T engine is real. You don't have to be a seasoned pilot to find out.

Conclusion

In summary, a strong "European Times" front stands against "Asian Times", led spar the Honda one-design strategy. How could the weather come back against the will of the world's most powerful wheel builder? This is not a miracle, but more simply a good technical solution to a technical problem.

However, the implementation of the Euro5 standard risks sounding the death knell for the boxed 50 Temps. No builder is ready. Piaggio has just announced the end of production of its 2temps engines resulting in Aprilia, Gilera et Derbi. It is therefore between 25 and 30% of the production that will disappear.

Although it pollutes more and uses more fuel, the 2T engine is not out of fashion. On the contrary. Manufacturers like Peugeot have worked on new 2T engines.

These have partially corrected the shortcomings: they consume less oil, are more robust, make less noise and, above all, pollute less. Essential developments for these 50cc often intended to circulate in town.

With the arrival of the 2 stroke injection engines, the 2 stroke engines will perhaps have a second life. The drawbacks of the 2 time carbureted are well on the way to being eliminated.

On admission, only air enters the engine. This air is compressed under the piston then sent to the combustion chamber par the admission light. The sweeping is carried out with this air which, having no fuel, does not generate waste. The fuel will only be injected during compression when the piston goes up.

In comparison with a "4 time" engine of the same cylinder, a "2 time" engine is:

30% lighter

30% cheaper

30 to 40% less bulky

up to 50% more efficient

It is clear that the future of the motor 2 time passes par direct electronic fuel injection into the cylinder head.

For the same speed of rotation and the same size, the 2 time motors allow theoretically to benefit from double the work par cycle (one engine time par crankshaft revolution, instead of engine time for 2 crankshaft revolutions for 4 time) and better engine torque consistency.

The distribution is carried out without valves, hence a simplified construction (few moving parts, space-saving, 60% lighter and therefore lower manufacturing cost). A certain reliability follows from this.
