QUADS APPROVAL

Which homologation for my quad?

A homologated quad is a machine authorized to drive on roads and open paths (unless specifically prohibited) and passable. He must meet certain obligations and have very specific equipment.

The "D.1" field of the registration certificate indicates the national type of the vehicle. Depending on the certification standard chosen par the manufacturer, the machine belongs to the motor quadricycle (QM) or to the tractor (TRA) type. Each genre is divided into several categories. Below are the main categories and their essential characteristics. For more details, refer to Article R 311-1 of the Highway Code.

A new category of certification has emerged following the entry into force of the standards euro 4. The T3B ABS category is queen: the quad is not limited in speed or power provided it has an ABS braking system and a maximum sound level of 85 decibels .

Quadricycle type

- Category L6E:

Light motor quadricycle: designed to travel at a maximum speed of 45 km/h. Engine displacement should not exceed 50cc for gasoline engines, 3cc for diesel engines. In any case, the maximum power is 500 kW (3 hp), including for electric motors. The maximum curb weight is set at 4 kg.

- Category L7E :

Heavy motor quadricycle: no displacement limit but the speed is limited to 90 km/h for a maximum power of 15 kW (20 hp). The empty weight must not exceed 600 kg for the transport of goods and 450 kg for the transport of people.

To drive such a vehicle, here are the necessary conditions:

- Be at least 16 years old with the B1 permit – B or A permit if passed before 2013.

- Wear an approved helmet and a pair of CE certified gloves

- The quad must be limited to 90 km/h (its power not being limited).

- Arrange, like all vehicles authorized on open roads, headlights with position lights, dipped and main beam headlights and indicators.

- Its empty mass must be less than or equal to 450 kg.

- Have a license plate equipped with plate lighting.

- A gray card (since 2010) or an operating plate. (TRA mention as for tractors).

- To be covered par an insurance.

- Standard injection euro 4.

- Limited sound level euro 4.

- Rear differential.

- Maximum 2 passengers.

Type agricultural tractor

- Category T1, T2 and T3:

Since 2016, some quads have been type-approved as agricultural vehicles (“T” for tractor). The index "a" (T1a, T2a, T3a) indicates that their speed is limited to 40 km/h. The "b" index (T1b, etc.) distinguishes models not limited to 40 km/h. These categories are not limited in power.

- T1: Applies to standard wheeled tractors with minimum track (width) of the axle closest to the driver equal to or greater than 1 mm, unladen mass in running order greater than 150 kilograms and the ground clearance less than or equal to 600 mm.

- T2: Applies to narrow-track tractors with a minimum track of the axle closest to the driver of less than 1 mm, an unladen mass in running order of more than 150 kilograms and a lower ground clearance. greater than or equal to 600 mm.

- T3: Concerns micro tractors with an empty mass in running order of less than or equal to 600 kilograms.

Currently, a majority of quads are homologated T3b.

For individuals, in order to benefit from this approval, you must:

- Be at least 18 years old and have license A or B.

- Wear an approved helmet and a pair of CE certified gloves and be covered par an insurance.

- The quad must be limited to 40 km/h (t3A) or 60km/h (t3B) (its power not being limited).

- Arrange, like all vehicles authorized on open roads, headlights with position lights, dipped beam and main beam. Also blinkers.

- Be fitted with a flashing light and a brake fluid indicator.

- Have a rear hitch – 50mm ball with beam.

- Its empty mass must be less than or equal to 450 kg.

- Have a license plate equipped with plate lighting.

- A gray card (since 2010) or an operating plate. (TRA mention as for tractors).

- Have a rear speedometer disc of 40km/h or 60km/h depending on the type of homologation T3.

Not approved

Some quads are not homologated and do not have a registration certificate. They are therefore not limited in power or performance. But they can only be used within private grounds closed to traffic. Civil liability insurance is mandatory.

How to homologate a Quad

Approving a quad allows it to be made legally authorized to circulate on public roads. This is a supervised process par the law, which involves checking that the vehicle complies the technical, environmental and safety standards in force. Here is a complete explanation on the stages, conditions and particularities of the approval of a quad:

1. Two possibilities for approval

Manufacturer's approval (known as "CE type")

  • It is realized directly par the manufacturer or the importer of the quad.

  • The vehicle is delivered already approved, with a carte grise and all required equipment.

  • It is registered in gender L6th, L7th (motor quadricycle) ou T3a/T3b (agricultural tractor) according to technical standards.

  • This is the simplest and recommended solution whether you buy a new or used quad.

Individual approval (RTI: Individual Approval)

  • It concerns quads not originally approved, imported or modified.

  • Made with the DREAL (or DRIEE/DEAL depending on the region).

  • Requires demonstrating the technical compliance of the vehicle to standards (brakes, lighting, noise, pollution, safety devices, etc.).

  • Process complex, expensive and sometimes refused if the vehicle is not designed for the road.

2. Technical conditions to be respected

A quad intended for homologation must:

  • To have a compliant braking system (rear and front brake, often ABS for the standard Euro 4).

  • Être equipped with full lighting : dipped beam, main beam, position lights, indicators, brake light, license plate light.

  • To have a horn system.

  • Have wing mirror, speedometer, parking brake device, etc.

  • Respect noise and pollutant emission limits (Euro 4 or 5 depending on the date of release).

  • Être limited to 45 km/h (L6e), 90 km/h (L7e), or 40/60 km/h (T3a/b) depending on the category.

3. Administrative procedures

  1. RTI file to be created with the DREAL:
    • Invoice or proof of purchase.

    • Manufacturer's descriptive notice.

    • Partial certificates of conformity (brakes, noise, etc.).

    • Photographs of the vehicle.

  2. Passing the technical inspection :

    • Visual inspection and measurements (size, power, noise, etc.).

    • Checking safety equipment.

  3. Obtaining the acceptance report delivered par the DREAL.

  4. Registration card request via the ANTS (https://immatriculation.ants.gouv.fr).

Good to know

  • Not all quads are eligible to RTI approval. Some leisure or competition models are not approved.

  • Cost may vary from 300 to 1000 €, or even more, depending on the necessary modifications.

  • It is prohibited from driving on the road with an unapproved quad, even partially equipped.
