Usually located in the engine block, the oil filter is a mechanical part that collects all impurities in order to keep the engine oil clean. Indeed, during the circulation of the oil in the various parts which compose the engine, the oil transports numerous particles which make it dirty. These abrasive particles of internal and external origins (dust, combustion residues, abrasive particles due to normal wear of mechanical parts) create significant wear and damage the engine. It is therefore necessary to reduce their number and size. This is the role of the oil filter, it always maintains optimum oil quality.
There are different filters on the market: the paper oil filter and the so-called cartridge oil filters (in metal). Each category of filters has its own characteristics. It is important to know them so that you can make the best choice when replacing them.

It is not easy to decide which is the best oil filter for your motorcycle. Indeed, each type of filter has its technical characteristics (strengths and disadvantages). While some models are designed to accommodate both types of filters, others will not be compatible. It is important to know the nature of the original filter (first fitted) and to replace it par an equivalent filter.
Although metal filters (cartridge type) are more durable, resistant and airtight, there are motors that cannot accommodate them.
Paper or metal oil filter?
It is important to know that there are mainly two types: the metal oil filter (on the outside) and the paper oil filter (on the inside). Note that depending on the model you choose, its replacement will not be done in the same way. The metal filter is easily unscrewed with a filter clamp. The paper oil filter will require a little more handling.
The replacement of the oil filter is usually carried out during the oil change of your machine in order to avoid polluting the new oil. Unlike some motorcycle consumables, there is no version " racing  »Oil filters to improve the performance of your vehicle.
The original filters are in principle the best suited for the engine. Buying different filters can pose risks to the durability and proper maintenance of the engine. Manufacturers therefore prohibit dealers from using an oil filter other than the original one during the warranty period.
Resin impregnated paper filters are the most common. With this type of filter, the clogging is progressive. The more the filter is loaded with impurities, the more power the oil pump requires to pass the oil through the filter. The engine power gradually drops. The oil heats up as the filter becomes clogged (clogs).
Why choose a quality filter?
The better the quality of the oil filter, the better it will be at performing its job. Properly filtered engine oils properly lubricate metal parts and other engine components. And to be purified the oils need to be filtered par an efficient and effective system.
To sum up: Engine lubrication is fundamental to maintaining proper operation and ensuring the life of your machine.
The oil filter should be replaced at every oil change. Choose a quality filter. What makes the difference between a brand name filter and a first prize is the filtration area. For equivalent size, the internal filtration surface can vary from 10 to 50%.
There are several types of filters suitable for different models.
