Use your winch well for the quad

Essential accessory for quads and SSVs, the winch will ensure you return home if you come across extreme areas, quagmires or fallen trees on your route!

The winch is a lifting and pulling tool. A rope, line or cable attached to a load is wound around a drum and lifts it. Depending on the use, it can be portable, fixed, manual, electric or even hydraulic.

Owning a quad winch is an absolute necessity when using your machine to survey forest paths and difficult terrain. An accident quickly happened and pulling a machine weighing a few tonnes through the mud is impossible without a mechanical helping hand.

Choosing the right winch for quad / SSV

For leisure/quad touring use, a towing capacity of 1100lbs is more than enough and a synthetic rope will be more suitable than a wire rope.

For recreational use, it is necessary to choose a winch with a pulling capacity of more than 1300 kg. The heavier the vehicle, the more powerful the model will be needed. Choosing a synthetic string is also recommended.

In utility use we will favor a powerful winch of about 1500/2000 kg with a metal cable and the same will be true for mixed hiking/utility use.

The electric winch is a universal adaptable accessory that mounts on all brands and models of quads with a specific mounting plate. Winches are usually delivered with cables, relay, handlebar control and remote control.

Take good care of your winch

After each muddy ride, the winch should be thoroughly cleaned.

Scroll almost all the cable, keeping only a few turns on the drum. Let dry. On the other hand, any frayed, twisted or cut cable must be replaced. A metal cable must be lubricated to prevent rust. If you have chosen a synthetic cable, there is no need to grease it.

To wind the cable properly, it takes two people, unless your winch has a remote control. One controls the command, the other directs the cable and guides it for a good winding (a good winding allows a good unwinding!).

Use your winch well

The winches can be dangerous when used incorrectly or without taking proper safety precautions into account. Our goal is that with our advice you can use your winch safely.

- Wear gloves at all times. Good work gloves will do. We also recommend keeping more than one arm's distance between your hands and the winch as it rolls up the guide roller.

- Analyse the situation, evaluate the constraints, the possibilities. Reflection is essential before any maneuver.

- Avoid haste. Throughout the manoeuvre: only one maneuver master!

- Always leave 4 to 5 whorls (turns) on the drum.

- Avoid cable overlapping.

- Stretch the cable in the axis of the vehicle. If the vehicle is not in the axis, use one or more referrals, the cable must never form an angle of more than 45° par relative to the axis of the towing vehicle.

- The wheels of the vehicle will be in the axis of the tension.

- Do not use the cable directly on the tree at the risk of damaging it, use a strap.

- Beware of the danger of snagging par the cable or pulleys during maneuvers (fingers/clothes/jewelry etc.).

- Do not allow children to operate a winch.
