A bit of history on KTM (Kronreif und Trunkenpolz Mattighoffen)

KTM is an Austrian brand created in 1934 under the impulse of Hans Trukenpolz. It has its factories located in Mattighofen and Salzburg. It specializes in particular in the manufacture of bicycles, motorcycles and sports cars. Originally, KTM was just a locksmith.

But from 1937, the house will turn to the repair of motorcycles and cars.

She then launched her first motorcycle design project. In 1951, it realizes the R 100 equipped with a Rotax engine.

Brand KTM has grown over the years. It remains the first manufacturer of air-cooled four-stroke engines and road bikes with front and rear disc brakes.

KTM made his rally debut in 1993 and won the Atlas Rally the same year. In 2000 and 2001, she also won six off-road world championships.

His reference work is the 990 road model Superduke created in 2003.

In 2008, the company became insolvent and was divided into three companies: KTM Sportmotorcycles GmbH renamed KTM Sportmotocycles AG in 2009, KTM Fahrrad GmbH (bicycles), KTM Kehler GmbH (radiators).

In 2005, KTM Sportmotocycles AG has sold 80 thousand motorcycles worldwide and has entered into a cooperation with Polaris Industries. In accordance with an agreement, these two companies have assisted each other in the expansion of the market in the national markets: KTM in North America and Polaris in Europe. This cooperation was a trial agreement for two years, after which the two parties had to decide on the merger into a single company. In 2006, KTM announced that cooperation with Polaris was completed ahead of schedule.

The Swedish motorcycle company Husaberg AB and the Dutch company WP Suspension became subsidiaries of the KTM group.

In 2013, the brand owner KTM bought the Husqvarna brand. Since that time, the two brands have learned to coexist without competition within the same company.

KTM in competition

From 1954, the success of KTM is really there, both in dealerships and on the slopes.

KTM invests in competition and does not hesitate to create racing motorcycles. The brand will have quite a bit of off-road success, with an official stable in 125 and a few world championship titles gleaned over the years: 1974, 1978, 1980, 1984 and 1985.

Hungry for success, the company branched out into rallying, developed the first DUKE motorcycle in 1994 and, just a year later, acquired WP Suspension and the motorcycle manufacturer sports HUSABERG. The titles obtained during the Championmotorcycle world natcross of Shane King in the 500cc category and during numerous other races revived the sporting heritage of the very old brand KTM.

The Austrian company has been one of the most conquerors since 2001 in the Dakar Rally.

Over the years, the orange motorcycles have been entered into more and more races. While KTM still dominates international enduro, motorcycle racingcross and rally, it redoubles its efforts in the big supercross in the United States and is able to quickly achieve many successes in these championships.

Whether on the road or off-road, KTM is already establishing itself as a brand of global dimension with a complete range of products which extends from 50cc to 1300cc.
