Protect your motorcycle well for motorcyclingcross

Falls are much more common off-road than on the road. The protections are very useful devices to spare the various parts of your off-road motorcycle in the event of an impact or fall. Even if the cross and enduros have been designed to withstand falls, it is worth taking stock of the various protections.

Frame and engine protection for off-road motorcycles

1 - Frame or crankcase guards protect the frame in the area of maximum friction. The use of rubber increases the grip and therefore the control of the motorcycle.

Even if the casings are designed to protect certain elements of your engine, they are fragile parts that should also be protected. Given that on our so-called high-performance motorcycles, they are most of the time made of aluminum for weight reasons. They don't take shocks well.

2 - The clog : another part very exposed to shocks... especially at the level of the chassis and the bottom of the engine! The hooves protect this part.

It exists two types : the classic version and the "extreme" version. The latter is more expensive but also more protective since it is longer. Indeed, it will offer additional protection (against shocks, mud and dust) of the suspension links and its bearings.

The shoes are usually mounted with a few screws. They are therefore easy to unscrew for cleaning or emptying.

3 - Radiator guards : in the event of a fall on the sides, the radiators are subjected to torsion. Even if you can straighten them, it is always good to protect them as a preventive measure.

À force to be twisted, the grilles may also break and the fins of your radiators will be exposed to shocks, with the end result being poor heat exchange and therefore poorer cooling.

4 - Exhaust body protection : this area is very exposed to shocks: pebbles, branches, rock if you cross. The list is long !

Equip your motorcycle with suitable protection. There are several schools: carbon protection which has the advantage of being hard and therefore of completely insulating your exhaust. However, it is more brittle and more expensive than flexible protection. The latter will avoid small impacts but, during large shocks, will still transmit the force exhaust impact.

5 - The disk guard : brake discs are often put to the test. Whether it is during your passages in ruts or on the occasion of projection, they will find themselves deformed in the long run.

This will decrease your braking efficiency and wear your pads prematurely. There are guards for the front and rear to take care of your braking system.

6 - Fork protectors : the fork is one of the elements of your motorcycle that is at the forefront! Maintaining it means ensuring its longevity and efficiency, essential when riding off-road.

Originally, it is equipped with hard plastic protections which will limit impact marks. Depending on your use, you can also opt for flexible protections which will avoid the harmful effects of sand, mud and dust, while protecting your spinnaker seals.

Finally, there are lower fork protectors that will protect your hardware. You will no doubt thank them when you have to disassemble your wheel or drain your fork!

7 - Handguards : essential, hand guards come in two forms: open or closed. The latter obviously offer more complete protection. But unlike open handguards, they can obstruct your view during technical passages and allow less easy clearance of the hands. Their purpose is to protect your clutch and brake levers.

Tip 1: having levers in advance can always save you a day.

Tip 2: it is to mount your casseroles with a few turns of Téflon before tightening them. The support will be sufficient and they will be able to turn in the event of an impact, thus limiting breakage.

8 - Chain guides : equipping yourself with a good chain guide is really essential car this makes it possible to have a perfectly guided chain (therefore to reduce its wear) and above all to protect your sprocket against shocks, in particular in stones or ruts.

9 - the gripster : prevents punctures, by preventing the inner tube from rotating and pinching.
