the YAMAHA DTMX 125

La Yamaha DTMX 125 is part of the range of trails feature cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engines par air. Range DTMX is part of the large family of the range Yamaha DT.

It was offered in six powertrains: 50, 80, 125, 175, 250, 400cc. It is essentially all-terrain oriented.

It is the first mass-market motorcycle equipped with a single-combined cantilever rear suspension. She remained for 18 years in the sales catalog, she contributed to the popularity of the green motorcycle. She holds the record for the best annual sale in the category in France1. From an original displacement of 175cc for the market in the United States, it is available in 3cc for most of the European market, including France.

The evolution of the model

The first model produced between 1977 and 1979 is type 2A6. The 125 DTMX takes nothing back from its ancestors, the Yamaha 125 DTFs and 125 DTEs.

The engine is a two-stroke single cylinder. The carburettor is of the brand circular throttle type. Mikuni. It has a diameter of 24 mm. The cylinder is in cast iron jacketed light alloy. It is equipped with an intake port with valves, four transfers and an exhaust port. Admission is par valves (baptized epar Yamaha torque induction). The fuel tank has a capacity of 7 L of which 1 L is reserve. A 1L oil tank supplies the engine with lubricant by means of a branded pump Mikuni. The clutch is of the multi-disc type in oil bath; five synthetic discs attached to the clutch housing, four smooth steel discs attached to the sprocket. The gearbox is a six-speed constant mesh. The fork, whose tubes are protectedar rubber bellows, has 180mm travel. The rear suspension is a novelty: there are no longer two combined shock absorbers/springs, but a single cantilever shock absorber, already present on the motorcycles of cross of this period. The ignition is with a breaker.

In terms of aesthetics, the 1979 year differs from the two previous ones by, mainly, an openwork front fender in its lower part, a new decoration, side covers and redesigned counters.

It is necessary to change the suspension: abandonment of the two rear shock absorbers for a novelty. The cantilever: long-travel central shock absorber housed under the saddle and the tank.

Thus equipped, the 125 DTMX is an opponent not to be overlooked in competition. Especially since the modifications intended to "boost" the engine are easy and frequent.

For the little story, Yamaha then tries the blow to present his motorcycle on the ice track of Isola 2000, facing the Lancia Stratos of Bernard Darniche. The motorbike takes only 2 seconds in the view…

If it still sells 20.000 motorcycles in France in 1980, this volume collapses in 1981 (7500) following new legislation, the car license as well as the 1 no longer authorizing the driving of motorcycles over 80 cm3. The versatility of DTMX allows it to remain in the catalog, and other markets exist in Europe so that the adventure continues despite the appearance of the 125DTLC liquid cooled.

The next model, produced from 1986 to 1991, is type 3YV.

The colors change and the exhaust is restricted. Due to the new legislation in force, the power drops by 2 hp and falls to 13 hp at 6 rpm (measured at the crankshaft) for a torque of 000 to” to (too)

A historic model

La Yamaha 125 DTMX has gone through the ages, but its popularity has not dropped a bit. With its record sales figures, over 97 thousand units sold in France, the 000 DTMX marked an entire generation and is one of the must-have motorcycles in the history of the 2 wheels.

It was marketed in France in 1977 until 1991. She is a trail and not an enduro. Some think par mistake that it is a Enduro but it is indeed a trail.

Those who knew and rode it will never be able to forget it, it is both sober and elegant, reliable: it's the DT125MX! It marks a turning point.

It was the bike that every 16-year-old wanted to ride, but not just … the 30-, 40- and 50-year-old generations continue to love.

A poster campaign on the 125DTMX in 1979 does not hesitate to cover the walls of our cities with a big: "ENJOY". This 125cc is equated with "PLEASURE" and it works. THE DTMX sell like hot cakes.
