air filter maintenance

Properly maintain your off-road motorcycle air filter

Le air filter is the lung of the motorcycle, so you have to take great care of it car the life of the cylinder and piston is dependent on it. If it is in poor condition, the performance and longevity of your engine will suffer, not to mention the influence on fuel consumption.

In use cross/enduro, count a wash after each ride and a replacement every eight to ten washes. Do not take any risks if in doubt, given the price of a foam filter, it must be changed.

Removing the air filter

The replacement of a motorcycle air filter does not make too many mysteries. In most cases the filter is in an air box, which is usually located behind the carburetors, under the tank or under the seat.

In any case, read the technical documentation supplied with your motorcycle.

During disassembly - reassembly, you can take the opportunity to wipe and suck up any impurities that may have settled in the air box itself, and to purge it by opening the end © of the small pipe which sometimes comes out of it downwards.

Cleaning the off-road motorcycle air filter

For foam air filters, avoid white spirit and gasoline which degrade the cells. In an airtight bucket, use air filter cleaner. Soak the filter, leave to act and wring out (especially do not twist it).

After removing most of the liquid by kneading the filter and shaking it, allow to air dry for 1-2 hours. If you go to the oiling stage with a wet filter, you would run the risk of mold forming inside the foams...

While your filter dries, take the opportunity to clean the inside of your air box with a cloth soaked in petrol or a brush.

Air filter lubrication

Soak up the filterspecial air filter oil, place a container under the filter to catch any excess. Apply the oil evenly over the entire surface of the filter.

Also remember to impregnate the inside of the filter.

You can also put the filter in a plastic bag and pour oil into the pocket and knead the filter, it avoids getting your hands dirty and you can also collect the excess oil more easily.

Knead the air filter gently to remove excess oil. The goal is to remove as much oil as possible to leave only a film and have a uniform color on the outside and inside of the filter.

Reassembling the off-road motorcycle air filter

Wait 24 hours before mounting it so that the excess oil drains perfectly (recommendation TWIN AIR). Install the filter on its support.

Apply some fat around the edge of the filter which is in contact with the motorcycle's air box, this will prevent dust and other impurities from entering the engine by passing under the air filter.

Conclusion

Remember that the air filter is the lung of your motorcycle. If it clogs, your engine will be starved of air and will end upar choke. Filter clogging has the effect of reducing engine performance, greatly increasing fuel consumption and causing premature wear of mechanical parts.

Regular maintenance of your air filter is not to be taken lightly; especially since most of the time this maintenance is not very complicated and can be done more or less quickly.
