HOW TO RIDE A BIKE IN TOUTE SECURITY?

The highway code applies in the same way to all users. In order to guarantee everyone's safety, cyclists must respect a certain number of rules, in town or outside built-up areas, day and night.

Cycling exposes you to a significant risk of accident, especially when you move directly on the roadway, alongside motorized vehicles.

Lack of safety is the main reason given for not riding a bicycle on the road. It is nevertheless a means of locomotion both practical and beneficial to health. It allows you to move around while playing sports and reducing environmental pollution. To encourage cycling, many cities have developed infrastructure for cyclists. This allows you to ride in a more secure environment. There are also many simple pieces of equipment and measures you can take to ride a bike safely.

Cycling in town

For all cyclists, the obligation to use the lanes or cycle paths is instituted.ar the authority after consulting the prefect. However, it is strongly recommended that cyclists, for their safety, favor using the lanes dedicated to them.

If the roadway is lined on either side par cycle lanes, the users of these lanes must take the one on the right, in the direction of the traffic and respect the traffic lights regulating the crossing of the roads.

In the absence of cycle paths or lanes, cyclists ride on the right side of the roadway and can move away from vehicles parked on the right side of the roadway, a distance necessary for his safety.

Do not ride on the sidewalks. Only children under the age of eight are authorized to use the sidewalks, provided they drive at a reasonable pace and do not obstruct pedestrians.

Cyclists are permitted to ride on greenways, meeting areas or 30-hour zones, unless otherwise arranged as may be made par municipal authorities.

Bicycles must park as a priority in the places which are specifically assigned to them. Parking on the sidewalk is however possible provided that it does not constitute a danger for other users and does not obstruct traffic.

In the meeting areas, do not travel at more than 20 km/h and respect the priority of the pedestrian.

In the 30 zones, pedestrian areas and meeting areas, bicycles can circulate in both directions. Two-way allows you to benefit from better visibility, avoid major traffic arteries and simplify routes.

If you are riding in a group, ride two abreast or in single file. At night, in case of overtaking par a vehicle or when the circumstances require it (narrow road, etc.), systematically place yourself in single file.

Do not drive too close to the shoulder, to avoid ruts and gravel;

In bends, tighten as much as possible to the right car the cars only see you at the last moment;

Be particularly careful when a truck passes: the draft may throw you off balance;

As soon as night falls, use a white headlight at the front, red at the back, reflective devices on the sides. Prefer light-colored clothing that you can accompany with reflective bands or a high visibility "yellow vest" chasuble.

Do not hesitate to try different routes, favoring those that are equipped with cycle facilities as well as small streets and quiet neighborhoods.

Avoiding Accidents: Additional Tips

Several golden rules must be taken into consideration to guarantee road safety for cyclists. They must stay focused on the traffic, keep their balance and look well left and right before turning. A rearview mirror can be useful in this regard.

It is also advisable to check the state of inflation and wear of the tires to avoid the risk of punctures, test the brakes and the pedals so as not to fall into problems braking and derailing chains.

Cyclists should always remember to increase their safety distances and be very careful when a vehicle wishes to overtake them. Avoid plugging in headphones while pedaling, to be able to hear any warnings from drivers, is a point not to be overlooked.

Please note: it is forbidden to wear any device likely to emit sound (headphones, earphones or headphones) in the ear. Hand-held telephone use is also prohibited. In case of non-compliance with this rule, you are liable to a fixed fine of 135 €.
