Are you planning a trip to Europe? Remember to find out about the driving rules because, between barrier-free tolls and areas where traffic is limited, a fine can quickly arise... and it can be hefty! I committed an offense against theranger, What am I risking ?

Each EU country has its own highway code that must be respected. If we commit an offense against the stateranger, we are subject to the highway code of the country where the offense is committed as well as the sanctions put in place. (Example: If you commit an offense in Germany, you are subject to the rules in force in Germany.)

Since 2000, France has been practicing cross-border exchange of information with 10 EU countries, this makes it possible to identify the driver who committed the offense and send the ticket directly to them. Thus, this puts an end to the impunity of drivers who commit offenses against theranger. Rest assured, you will not lose points on your license following an offense committed at theranger. Par However, you still risk a fine or even imprisonment for a serious offense. Here is the list of offenses for which you can be prosecuted in France:

- Speeding
- Crossing a red light
- Driving while intoxicated
- Driving under the influence of drugs
- Failure to wear a helmet
- Driving on a prohibited lane

If you were arrested on the spot, you can pay the fine directly. Otherwise, it will be sent to your home. The notification letter must be written in French. If the notification letter is written in a foreign language, you can object and request that the letter be returned in French. (Be careful though, the dispute deadlines are rather short.)

EPZs in Europe

EPZs in Europe

In order to limit the circulation of the most polluting vehicles and improve air quality, certain European countries have implemented Low Emission Zones (EPZ) as Par example in Belgium. To be able to travel in these areas, you must register in advance. If your vehicle does not meet the criteria set up in these areas, you will either have to pay a fee or find another vehicle.

There are surveillance cameras that allow vehicles traveling in these areas to be monitored. Fines for violations can range from 150€ in an EPZ in Belgium £ 2000 (~€500) in England.

Barrier-free tolls

Barrier-free tolls

In some EU countries (Italy, Portugal etc.), there are barrier-free tolls. This means that you can cross the toll without paying… Big mistake! These barrier-free tolls are equipped with surveillance cameras that will photograph the vehicle's license plate. Result: you receive a fine at home for non-payment of the toll.

More and more countries are adopting this system"free flow"Or"free flow" which makes traffic flow more smoothly by preventing drivers from stopping. There are subscriptions which allow payment to be made automatically each time they pass (Example: the subscription Telepass in Italy or the badge electronic toll In France). Otherwise, it is possible to register the registration plate of your vehicle as well as your bank details on the website of the motorway concerned which will deduct the sum corresponding to the number of journeys made during the week. Finally, there are payment terminals on certain highways which allow you to pay the toll.

Italy: The “Zona Traffico Limitato” (ZTL)

The ZTL are restricted traffic areas in Italian cities with historic centers. Only residents and registered vehicles can travel there. Each entry in a ZTL is indicated par a panel and is controlled par video surveillance. There are also electrical terminals which record vehicle registration plates.

If you enter a ZTL without authorization, you incur a fine ranging from 100 to 200 € at each pass. Fines accumulate without limitation of amount and are sent directly to the person who committed the offense within a period of 360 days . If you do not pay the fine, you may be prosecuted in France.ar through the Italian authorities. There is also a risk if you return to Italy and get checked par authorities.

Be careful, you can quickly find yourself driving in a ZTL without knowing itar the signs are often high up, therefore less visible, and the explanations (timetables, authorized vehicles, etc.) are only given in Italian.

What happens if I stay in a hotel located in a ZTL ?

You can ask the hotelier to register your license plate for the duration of your stay. However, it should be noted that the authorization to travel in the ZTL where your hotel is located does not mean that you will be able to travel in all ZTL from the city.

The cities concerned par the ZTL are: Rome, Turin, Pisa, Naples, Verona, Milan and Palermo. Do not hesitate to find out more on their official sites before your stay.

As with the ZTL, there are surveillance cameras that check the license plates of vehicles entering and exiting to check whether they are registered in the database. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions by reducing car travel and favoring public transport. It is possible to register your vehicle via the website Transport for London.

The congestion charge zone includes the areas of Victoria, St James, Waterloo, Borough, City of London, Clerkenwell, Finsbury, Holborn, Bloomsbury, Soho, Mayfair and parts of Marylebone. The roads bordering the area are not tolled.

- £ 180 (~€500) for payment within 100 to 100 days
