Also known as the horn, the horn works by a membrane that vibrates the air to produce sound. The use of the horn is regulated epar the Highway Code. In built-up areas, it is forbidden to use it except in cases of immediate danger.
Originally, Klaxon was a brand name. The word horn is thus passed into everyday language (antonomasis). An audible warning system is compulsory on all vehicles.
An essential device for your safety, the horn is used to produce an audible warning to indicate to other road users, including pedestrians, your presence or a potential danger.
The Highway Code even provides for penalties in the event of:
- Improper use of the horn: fixed fine of 35 €.
- Non-conformity of the horn which must be approved: fixed fine of € 68.
Its malfunction is generally linked to an electrical problem, sometimes due to a fault in the Battery.
If your horn no longer beeps or is very weak, several causes may explain this malfunction:
- The battery is not sufficiently charged: it supplies the horn with electricity. If it is broken, you will also have difficulty starting your vehicle and will no longer be able to use the various electrical accessories correctly.
- An error on the electrical circuit: if the cable ensuring the electrical supply is damaged, the horn can no longer function properly.
- The horn connectors may be oxidized or damaged, cleaning with sandpaper will remove the oxidation.
- An order problem: the order between the switch box and the horn may have a contact problem at the button, so this prevents the horn from sounding.
- The horn may also have burned out, replace it quickly.
- Very exposed to the elements and projections of all kinds, the horn membrane can be dirty. It can be cleaned with " WD40 ».
