Lithium battery

Lithium battery

La Battery is an essential part. In fact, it is this which allows the engine to start, to power the headlights, indicators and all other electrical elements. Like any part of a vehicle, its lifespan is limited and its replacement may be essential to guarantee the proper functioning of your two-wheeler. If you notice a drop in performance, difficulty starting, or dim lighting, these are signs that it may be time to replace your battery. Among the different types of batteries, we find in particular the lithium battery.

Presentation of the lithium battery

Origin and evolution

Appearing on the market in the 90s, the lithium battery quickly established itself as a reference, par its performance and durability. It is now used more and more in various devices, including two-wheelers. Designed to produce the electrical energy necessary to start the vehicle, it stores a large quantity of energy, thus ensuring reliability during departures.

How does it work ?

A battery is made up of two electrodes immersed in a electrolyte, a conductive substance in liquid or solid form, and connected to the exterior par a metal wire. When the battery discharges, the negative electrode, called anode, releases electrons which pass through the conducting wire and are captured par the positive electrode, the cathode. This movement of electrons creates an electric current that can be converted to power a motor. When the battery is recharged using an external electricity source, these movements are reversed. To maintain balance in this electron transfer, a flow of positive ions occurs between the two electrodes through the electrolyte.

The lithium atom can release one of its three electrons, thus forming an ion Li+, positively charged. So, in the case of a lithium battery, the cathode is often made of cobalt oxide, with a small amount of lithium, while the anode is made of graphite. The electrolyte consists of lithium salts in a solvent and therefore contains a large amount of lithium ions. This is why we also talk about lithium-ion battery.

Advantages of this type of battery

Lightness

Lithium batteries are approximately three times lighter than lead-based batteries. This feature will be of particular interest to those looking to lighten their two-wheeler.

Longevity and energy density

With an extended lifespan, up to 10 days of charging without any use, the lithium battery stands out par its reliability. In addition, the lithium battery has a higher energy density than other types of batteries. Concretely, this means that it can store more energy for a given weight, proving more efficient than traditional batteries. In fact, on average, it can store 100 to 100 times more energy.

Easy maintenance

Lithium batteries require less maintenance than lead acid batteries. All you need to do is recharge them regularly and take care not to expose them to extreme temperatures.

How to choose your lithium battery

The choice of battery for a motorcycle, quad or scooter should not be done at random. It is important to take into account several criteria, such as dimensions or amperage in order to check if the battery is compatible. The polarity, terminal locations and mountings of the battery must also match those of the vehicle.

Dimensions and weight

The battery must fit perfectly in the compartment provided in the vehicle. It is therefore important to check the dimensions (length, width and height) and weight of the original battery before purchasing.

Amperage

It is essential to select a battery with the same amperage as your current battery. Amperage corresponds to the power of the current that your battery is capable of providing. A battery with too low amperage may not provide enough current to start your vehicle. Conversely, a battery with a higher amperage can damage the entire electrical system of your vehicle.

Cold Cranking Capability (CCA)

CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps. It is a measure of a battery's ability to start an engine in extreme cold conditions. The higher the CCA value of the battery, the better its ability to supply current par cold weather.

How to maintain your lithium battery

Tips for extending life

To maximize the life of your battery, it is recommended to keep it at a constant charge and avoid deep discharge. You should also protect your battery from extreme temperatures, including severe cold, which can affect its performance. Also, check the condition of your battery regularly, car a leak or damage following a fall or impact can cause it to spontaneously combust!

Test the battery

A battery tester can be a great tool for monitoring the health of your battery and spotting any potential issues. It can check the battery's charge level, voltage and internal resistance, providing valuable information about your battery's performance. Find our range of battery testers.
