Understand how an exhaust line works

The gas exhaust is carried out on one or more lines. They are composed, from the cylinder to the outlet:

1) of the relaxation pot: it collects the gases burnt in the engine block. To decrease the temperature and the pressure, it decompresses them in an enlarged space;

2) of the catalyst or filter: essential to obtain road approval, it drastically reduces the pollution generated.ar the exhaust. Its lifespan does not exceed 150 000 km;

3) from silencer : decompression is noisy. A device aimed at reducing noise is essential to avoid risking a fine for “annoying noise”. The authorized decibels depend on the approval indicated on your registration document. It comes in the form of a cartridge filled with a coating that slows and relaxes the gases leaving the engine.

Un exhaust fits your cylinders. Too much freedom for the throttle, consumption and engine noise are increased. Too muffled, your performance will be reduced. The cylinders are not the cause of the number of exhaust pipes. Located at the exit of the cylinders, just under the cylinder head, the manifold and its exhaust valve have the function of grouping the cylinders towards one or more common outlets. It can be equipped with a catalyst to reduce pollution by finalizing the exit of gases. At the outlet of the pot, the exhaust silencer containing the baffle(s) allows the gases to be cooled and the noise to be reduced.

Three materials are mainly used for the design of the muffler. Carbon: medium range, aesthetic, rapid cooling, deteriorates rapidly. Titanium: high-end, light, its high price and a blue color that appears with age. Stainless steel: Entry-level, inexpensive and efficient, a yellow color that appears with aging.
