condition of a vintage motorcycle

I am renovating a PEUGEOT 103 moped Chrono

You are going to start repairing a moped Peugeot 103 Chrono. Are you going to opt for a renovation or a restoration.

Renovation : action of refurbishing par more or less important transformations. It is a kind of "recycling" which gives a second life.

restoration: action of restoring to its original state. It consists in restoring the original state while preserving the historical value.

Restoration is therefore very different from renovation. During a restoration, the preservation of the originality of the model will be essential.

Nothing stops you from starting par a renovation (lack of financial means par example) to skip a restore in the future. This approach will require preserving the original elements and preventing them from degrading.

Find our advice on the different points to check before purchase.

Before embarking on the work, you need to know the characteristics of the model to be renovated. Even if the models of Peugeot may look similar, there are differences and it is better to know how to distinguish between the different models. On the other hand, these characteristics will tell you if your model has been modified or not. Same goes for other brands Peugeot, Piaggio... Which is important in the context of a restoration. Remember to consult our moped technical sheets

chassis parts

The cycle part

The framework : A complete inspection to locate rust spots, dents and paint chips to be treated. Decorations will be removed using a heat absorber. If glue residue remains, use glue thinner. Be careful, some thinners can damage the support, such as white spirit on paint. Do a test beforehand with a cotton swab dipped in the thinner then applied to the support. After about twenty minutes, if the agent has not caused a reaction, you can use it without risk. On the other hand, no acetone on paints and varnishes.

Remember to work in a well-ventilated room.

Painting of the frame: complete cleaning - preparation of the support – sanding – possible repair – painting

If the frame does not require painting, after thorough cleaning, pass a product polish using a soft cloth, then polish to restore the shine to the paint. Prefer a solid product to apply rather than an aerosol product containing silicone which gives an ephemeral shiny appearance that disappears with the first shower.

The rims : According to the general state, they will be thoroughly cleaned. If the paint is faded, a light sanding followed by two coats of paint will give them a nice look. If the chrome of the rims is pitted, it is possible to have them sandblasted then re-chromed (for a perfect job, contact a specialist).

If they are too damaged (deformed, warped, with bumps or hollows, cracked, several missing spokes, significant presence of rust) they will have to be replaced.

The tires: Tires quickly lose their strength and grip properties over the years. First visual observation: Absence of relief on the tread, cracked sides, possible hernia, traces shock, snag on the tire, deformation and loss of flexibility of the tire. You have noticed one of the faults, proceed with the change.

The most common dimensions on mopeds are: For widths:

For diameters: 16 and 17 inches, almost all models Peugeot and Motobécane have tires corresponding to these dimensions.

Take inner tubes of a very high quality.

Another important point is to put in place rim tape new. This is a rubber band that is placed around the circumference of the rim to protect the inner tube and prevent it from rotating inside the tire

The hub: Perform an inspection. In most cases, the bearings are worn out and need to be replaced. If not, cleaning and lubrication.

Drums and fittings: The brake shields and the linings will be checked. The flanges are degreased with brake cleaner then coated with steel wool. The fillings changed if necessary.

The fork : Control the fork. A change of dust cover, the replacement of a spring or even the complete fork. Complete cleaning of the chrome parts and polishing with steel wool. The sleeves sanded. Then reassembled with new springs and dust covers. The sleeve stickers will be applied at this time.

The shock absorbers: It is generally accepted that they should be replaced.

Chain, crown and pinion: Wear parts par excellence, the installation of new elements is essential.

The motor part

The tank: Tips for removing rust from the tank: as on many models the tank is not removable, here are some tips for restoring it:

The fastest :

Fill the tank with cola soda, and let it work. The chemical reaction will not be long in coming, an overflow will occur, remember to use a drain tray pan . Leave to act overnight.

Another option: Put two to three handfuls of screws, nuts and more gravel. Shake the frame in all directions. The work can quickly become tedious, so you can hang the frame to help you.

Empty the tank completely. Rinse with water. Leave it to dry for a maximum of 24 hours in order to prevent rust from forming again.

Current fuels degrade on contact with metal and more particularly with rust. A chemical treatment reduces this degradation and avoids deposits.

Several brands specializing in renovation offer catering kits extremely efficient. Carefully follow the manufacturer's recommendations. The drying times must be respected in order to guarantee you the best result.

Replace the gas tap.

Engine : If the moped has started, you still need to check certain points and get it back on the road properly.

Engine operation: compression, adjustment of ignition and carburetion, checking of variator and its pulley

A replacement of engine gaskets, crankshaft bearings, spinnaker seals, segments and flat screws, spark plug .

The exterior parts can be cleaned to restore the shine of new. Proper lubrication of moving parts.

Take advantage of these major works to dismantle the exhaust and descale it. With the help of a wire brush, remove rust spots and possibly install a high temperature paint. Place to reassemble the engine.

Other parts to replace

Cables and sheaths : No renovation or restoration without a complete replacement of cables and sheaths and hoses.

Handles and levers : Handles and levers suffer over time. A replacement resuming the aesthetics of the original parts can be considered. For the accelerator, it is better to keep the body of the handle in order to preserve the reliability and the solidity of the whole. Connecting the cables, fitting the brake light switch to the handle, and hooking up the horn will complete the job. New liner grips will be installed.

The toe clip rubbers will be replaced par good quality replicas as well as for pedal models, pedal pads or pedals will be changed.

La seat must very often also be replaced. Many models in line with your renovation or restoration are available.

The rear light is too often broken or missing.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of the parts to restore or renovate as a priority. As you will have understood, this fascinating task will require time, time and above all time. The restoration requires mechanical skills (especially for the engine part) but also patience.

But what satisfaction to restore such a mythical vehicle and to be admired par passers-by who will smile at your passage with a pretty nostalgia.
